Garageband help

I recently bought a digital piano, a Williams Legato Plus, so I can practice without irritating everyone in the house. I was hoping to get it working as a MIDI controller on Garageband as well but it's not happening as easily as I'd hoped. Checking 'Preferences' > 'Audio/MIDI,' it shows that Garageband picks up that a midi controller is plugged in, but it's not registering a signal when I open up a new track. I've called in to Apple and they couldn't figure it out. They told me to call Williams who was no help whatsoever. Everything on youtube says, 'Yeah, just plug it in to your USB port and open a track. Have fun!"Has anyone had/resolved an issue like this?

I would see if I could duplicate the issue in Reaper.

Then try Local Off. Then try changing the MIDI channel.http://williamspianos.com/wp-content/uploads/usermanuals/10190\_Williams\_Legato\_Keyboard\_Manual.pdf

Midi nomenclature is not intuitive as it was created from the hardware end and they don't rewrite it to make sense to you average user. Others who know more can correct me but the idea is that the keyboard is sending the midi data to the sound module in the keyboard so you have the option to;+ Turn the routing to the internal sound module off and route the midi on to another sound module / computer.+ Have the sound in your keyboard still operate and record midi and another sound module both.+ Just trigger your internal sound module without any midi out.Your computer was recognizing that the midi device (handshake) was there it was just not receiving the data down the channel it was expecting it to come. You can think of it a bit like patch cables and you need the right send/output to the right resecieve/input.Originally there were 16 lines but I think with the new midi standards there are quite a few more over a 100 and as wireless midi become common it will be even more as the wires have previously restrained the channels. As well with DAWS and AU/VST computer synths you end up with a lot of need for more.Midi can get a lot more complicated with using your computer to operate a number of external modules or if you get to the point that you are sending sysex data across to program things. There are some real fun synths in Garage Band and that you can download from internet free. So have fun and don't stress the techno. We all have these problems the first time.
