Recording from a PA for dummies.

This is what I'd do:Disconnect the speakers and use the PA as a mixer.Point one mic in the general direction of the drum set. Point the other mic in the general direction of the bass amp.Connect the RCA outputs to the USB interface.Set the knobs on the mixer so that when you make sound in to the mics you see it show up in your recording program. Even better if you can get one mic only in one input and the other mic only in the other, but this isn't a deal breaker. How you do this is going to vary from mixer to mixer and program to program. Record a bit, listen to the playback on headphones from the usb interface or computer or whatever. Move mics and change levels until you are getting something good enough. Don't make yourself crazy, 'good enough' is good enough for a starting point. Continue to refine from session to session.

Verbs & Nouns wrote:So we ve been doing this for the last 6 months or so and we want to try and record something to release online. We ve got a half decent sound using the above set up, however I would love to be able to record two live seperate tracks into GarageBand (eg track one drums, track two bass) so can I change the volume of the drums or bass once recorded if need be. The room is only 3.5m x 5m, so I know there will be some bleed, but it s only slight volume increases that I really want. What type of (cheapies) USB interface would I be looking at to do this? Either something that we can put the mics straight into, or audio from the PA.Two inputs, and your certain?

Does the PA head not allow you to pan between the recording out jacks?I haven t really looked into it. I ll check it out next practice.Let's say you think "I'm going to need two inputs, max." Do you have any reason to believe that you might need four or more at some point in the future? If so, it might be easier to do so now. If nothing else, you might have functional channels if a channel takes a nose dive at some point.
