I then cracked the body at the neck pocket, and rendered the neck pickup non-functioning, at a show years ago. I had the crack professionally repaired at Tom s Guitar Repair here in Indy, but haven t played the guitar since. The neck pickup is still non-functioning, as far as I know. (Tom said he wasn t sure what the issue is, as he doesn t repair pickups, but it was working right up until the show at which I cracked the body.) I replaced the original tuners with Grovers; I ll include the originals, though the holes for the pegs have been bored out to accept the larger Grovers, so I don t think there s any reinstalling them. I was working on some HF humbucker copies a while back but unfortunately the pickup company went under.However - what we did suss out was there were 2 different types of Univox humbucker they fitted to HFs over the years. The early Phase 3s (with the smaller "Made In Japan" neckplate) have humbuckers with a transparent top to them. You can see the bobbins underneath.The later ones have a cream plastic top - they look identical otherwise - but the pickup inside is different. I'd have to ask my guy about what the differences were but they're not the same pickup with a different cover.I prefer the sound of the earlier transparent-topped ones ultimately. They have more clarity to my ears and are less humbuckery - wider sound, better highs, slightly duller overall and perhaps a little less output. I have a few HFs and the one with the transparent-topped pickups is noticeably different sounding to the point where my bandmates can tell I'm using one of the other ones, even if they can't see it. Whenever I switch to the backup one someone will stop practice and ask what's wrong with the sound.
