I'm in a situation where I can try out an apogee symphony vs. my old and admittedly far cheaper echo audiofire interface, and I'd like to, if possible, record the exact same thing (thinking just 4 mics on a drumkit) to two different interfaces. That is, not play the same thing twice, play it once so that I can have the exact same recording on two different machines.Is this possible and what is the easiest/best way of doing it?many thanks

The echo audiofire is line-in only, right? That means you must be using external preamps. If that's the case, just send the preamp outputs to both interfaces. Typical way would be with a mult on a patchbay.

If you think you can judge this based on dynamic mics, you could just buy a few microphone splitters and then sell them once you have made your call.Assuming you have enough preamps to do it all in one go.

As others are suggesting, you should try to eliminate different performances from the test. Splitting the mic preamps' outputs is a good suggestion.Also, don't forget to level match when you are comparing. Even a fraction of a dB is likely to sway you to choose the louder audio.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Does anyone have any thoughts on going to tape first and then bouncing to both separately? I guess there could be more discrepancy on playback etc., but assuming the machine is set up properly would this be reliable?
