I imagine like 75% of that is just them being awesome players, especially with dynamics, but the amps also had a quality where they could dig in and it didn't get harsh or have that icepick-y quality some twins have. Is that kinda the thing you're going for? Twin reverbs are weird because some do the Come/Rowland S Howard/post punk thing real well, but others are like headroom monsters with those EV speakers.Kev11 mentioned what he(or she?) was trying to ballpark here -Kev11 wrote:The twin definitely has potential for the sound I'm after- Rock Punk/Psychedelic Rock/Cramps/Gun Club/Black Angels etc. I was just expecting it to sound less muddy and take pedals better. I was thinking that the amp might not sound great since it was all stock and that maybe this was a known issue where modifications could really helpAssuming that it isn't something like tubes that have seen better days, one easy thing that sticks out in my mind is swapping out preamp tubes. While there aren't any "Silver Bullet" swaps without actually hearing the amp in question, trying out a 5751 preamp tube seems like it might be worth a try. This video has a "Before And After" withe a 5751 tube and a speaker swap. While it's not a jarring difference, it will give you a bit of an idea what you might get.
