Like most of his films, I think it could have been 20 minutes shorter but the 3 leads are absolutely brilliant. Stunned to learn that apparently it's around 90% true.I saw The Favourite this weekend too and agree with all this. I also thought the cinematography was absolutely stunning, particularly in the skin tone and in the blacks. The skin tone thing might seem perverse, as obviously the three leads are made to look palid and ill throughout, and there's lots of weird make-up, but I thought it (and they) looked brilliant. The darkness too, often in contrast to "natural" light, was really striking, particularly in that passage from one bed chamber to another, and around the edge of some shots. In the UK, period films have for so long been a kind of grindingly-cynical heritage industry, where if you put some famous actors in a palace or mansion, give them lots of costume and period ostentation, you're guaranteed to make your money back, so it's great to see something fresh and well, frankly beautiful to look at.

Saw both The Favourite and Roma this weekend. The Favourite is great. Probably Lanthimos' most accessible film so far but still full of quirks . Genuinely one of the best looking films I've ever seen (definitely helped watching in 4K). It's the first time, as an adult, that a film has made me properly cry. I've been thinking about it a lot today which is always a sure fire sign for me that a film is in the realms of classic.

I read the John Cheever short story The Swimmer a couple of years ago, then recorded it off the TV just before Christmas. I had no idea it was a film. I finally got to watch it last night. Fascinating and perplexing, the progression from up-beat to down-beat within that superficial/artificial environment was so well done. Loved it, and so did my wise-for-his-years 13 year old son. It really reminded me of The Truman Show.
