Well , yes - regular long-term use can interfere with your serotonin levels, leading to depression (which is usually temporary, but not always). By most accounts he was free of recreational stuff by the time he died, mind, although one of the obits I saw claimed that he was still on a cocktail of prescription drugs, and they can mess with your equilibrium too.
