Larry Cohen (RIP) was the king of this stuff. His movies usually had a nice combination of social insight and exploitation cheese. The Stuff is completely schlocky and dumb but also kinda smart and thoughtful too. Neither God Told Me To and It's Alive are as goofy but those are both solid little low budget films. Black Caesar and Hell Up in Harlem are both pretty great. BC has a killer soundtrack by James Brown. Some other stuff. Most of George Romero's stuff has transcended its exploitation roots but The Crazies is like the Cohen films in that it is thoughtful with an interesting POV but is executed sloppily so that a good deal of its fun comes from the dopiness of it. There is nothing redeemable about Don't Go Near the Park. Every part of it is stupid and bad and morally suspect. Just a terrible movie that I recommend everybody watch. When I was in college in Portland one of the local channels would show a midnight movie at least once a week, maybe on Sundays? They conveniently forgot to edit out the swearing and nudity too, which was a treat. I saw some good stuff like The Omega Man and Logan's Run for the first time but the one that really stuck with me was this movie called The Pit, about a weird little boy who finds a pit of trolls in a nearby field and stars feeding his enemies to them. There are lots of great touches like that he talks to his teddy bear who them talks back to him. Fine, you think, it shows that this kid is a weirdo who has an imaginary friend. But then there is an exposition-free scene in which we see the bear talking to itself, the weird little boy nowhere around, which means the bear is sentient. None of this comes up again. Also good is how he lures people into the pit, nobody ever noticing they are about to walk into a giant hole. I feel the need to watch this movie once a year or so. You can watch it here.
