I've never seen him live, but most performers doing roughly this sort of thing (like me), use a mixing board just to run stuff through on mulitiple channels and route things in different ways, like using the AUX ins and outs for effect loops etc. It is very common, more common than not. Aside from feedback and EQ possibilities, it just gives you multiple signal paths and a lot of autonomy and control over the sum you're sending.Looking at the picture though, he may just be sitting next to the stage mixer feeding the PA and just sending his master signal from the pedals through it, which gives him ultimate control of the PA and overall volume etc, also very common for shows in smaller venues.

Starting a catchall thread for weird acts, but I have a specific question about Oren Ambarchi s setup. I understand he uses expensive ring modulators, a Boomerang looper, 16 second delay, pitch shifters, a tone generator and some more effects, but what I don t understand is the mixer on his desk. What could this be for? I know some use mixers for a feedback loop, but I don t think that s what s happening here.

I think Ambarchi originally moved into the tabletop guitar approach/lineage over time, among other things, not sure what the sound sources are in the pictured set-up. Otherwise, people use every imaginable sound source in this wide field.Again, here that is not his own mixer. It is probably the main mixer feeding the venue PA and he just plugs right in on stage and can adjust overall volume to his liking while playing. That is very common for smaller settings for this music.

I typically would not play with an amp, so I'd send the main outs to the PA/soundboard. But that photo? Probably just the house board as previously mentioned.
**Do we need the other Chemical Bros. records??
