Steve's favorite Nirvana pressings

I read in an article.. while you can't believe everything you read; that Steve's favorite pressing is the 45rpm DMM 3LP In Utero. I love the 2013 mix as opposed to the 3LP 20th myself, way more dynamic, and it's just a fresh way to hear the tapes. Now, here's my question, if he were to remix Nevermind. What would it sound like? I prefer Butch's mixes, although I wish he stripped out some of the compression that he added to the Super Deluxe. What's Steve's favorite pressing of that record? Or.. of every record (if he''s heard them) which is his preferred mix?I like Bernie Grundman's mastering choices, maybe a bit bright, but the 320 cuts are way too bassy for my taste. I'd rather hear the detail than be thumping with bass.Thanks.. - Matt

You're going to get dragged mercilessly for this because this forum has been around a long time and serves a greater purpose than answering questions about Nirvana, but this seems like a normal way to get a question like this answered, so I get it.I'm not that familiar with Nevermind, sorry. I think Butch is a great engineer and I respect his choices a lot, if that tells you anything. I think the original 1993 mix of In Utero is fine and the definitive version, and the best edition of that is definitely the 2x45 version. The 2013 version was done to satisfy the band's curiosity about what an alternate version would sound like, and it seemed like something the listening public would appreciate as well so it was released as a special edition. I like it, it's essentially the same record, but I think the one the band made in the flow of the sessions is the definitive one.

Not casting stones, as I have lived in the thinnest of glass houses.

I would not denigrate anyone for asking record geek questions. Particularly when the band is somewhat relevant to the forum. In fact, I, myself, once inquired about the sound differences on a rejected test pressing of Big Black's Atomizer. (Answer: Steve has no memory of its existence.)steve wrote:You're going to get dragged mercilessly for this because this forum has been around a long time and serves a greater purpose than answering questions about Nirvana,This probably would have been true at one time, for sure. But the forum has become a lot cuddlier and more welcoming since those days (albeit perhaps a little less dynamic and snidely amusing, as well).
