Thought I d update this thread. After moping around for a while after a breakup and eating a lot of crap, I decided recently that I would get my act together and cook for myself at least one meal from scratch a day. I live in an old building so my kitchen is very basic, what they call a ˜gyp (I don t know why but it s almost definitely racist). Just a one hob situation, no oven. For that reason I ve been cooking one-pot things, including a lot of Indian and Mexican stuff, with profuse apologies to both those cultures. Once you have the standard spices and herbs, I find that these (or rather my approximations of them) are the best on the low-effort/high-deliciousness coefficient. Alongside that, like every student ever, an army of pasta dishes. I think I m pretty good at pasta now. Also been cooking bigger stuff with other people when possible, which is a lot of fun. Nothing I ve cooked from this thread hasn t been good. From October I m living with an Italian guy, a Polish guy, and a very devout (and engaged at age 20) Welsh woman. I realise this is the set up to a joke. BUT we will have a ˜proper kitchen, so I m looking forward to getting more ambitious. I already feel a lot healthier, and as will probably surprise nobody here it turns out that being able to cook is a universally impressive trait, which is a nice side effect. This thread was/is such a lovely thing and so helpful. Thanks to everyone who s posted in it.
