Agreed. The Sonics were more or less a revved up version of Bill Haley & the Comets but The Monks sounded and looked from another planet.

I checked, it's The Monks. The Sonics played garage rock, The Monks played The Monks music, it's of its time, but still unique, and totally great.

The Monks. Sonics are great and this is a hard one, but they took an existing paradigm and turned up some of the best aspects, whereas the Monks were Velvet Underground-grade innovators.

Both great, ferocious-in-a-pleasing-way rock bands at their best, but I'll go with The Monks simply because The Sonics never made an LP as solid start-to-finish as Black Monk Time. I also like The Monks' sacrilegious appeal."Strychnine" is a real "fist in the air" track though. I made a sixties psych-rock mix CD for a girl ages ago, and that was her favorite track on it, and it was among some stiff competition. "Have Love Will Travel" is another favorite.You can't mess with either band.
