(I imagine it's pretty good, but I mostly just created this poll to get the new Crap/Not Crap subforum going.)
(Also, I edited the title from "Movie:" to "Film:".)
Re: Movie: Nomadland
2Not crap! As a middle aged person who still lives paycheck to paycheck, I would imagine my retirement will look a lot like Nomadland.
Re: Film: Nomadland
3I read it before seeing it, and the script was underwhelming. The lead performance helps deal with some of that, but not enough to lift it out of the Crap zone. Still, waffles abound for the new forum.

Re: Film: Nomadland
5I respect it, mainly for the cinematography and McDormand's performance. It seems she would have been told to just respond in character to the various non-actors they featured in a lot of scenes (kind of a la Mike Leigh), which I imagine is quite a difficult thing to pull off, and she did it pretty seamlessly in the scenes that made it into the film.

Re: Film: Nomadland
6yeah it's well acted and looks nice and everything, but it doesn't really speak to me. Like, I'm glad these people are represented (although I'm probably not the target audience), but is that supposed to be enough?

7We deserve more Best Picture nominations about jammin' econo. Less noms for cruise ships, jokers and Matt Damon.
Nomadland is not crap.

8Real question, as I haven't seen this: how much of a commercial for Amazon is it?

It certainly doesn’t paint it as a charmed way to make a living. I’ve spent a lot of time in an Amazon distro facility last summer, and the film showed it for what it is...a tedious conveyer belt job with lame people meetings at the beginning of the shift.
Re: Film: Nomadland
10Thanks, that's helpful. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the film would have Nothing To Say™ about Amazon's labor practices, which I expected would amount to tacit approval.
