Re: Rock band format: Two drummers
21Del Rey (the Lana-less one) did this, no?
I guitar Conformists.
yes they did.
I think Gary Young was more versatile, in that he played to all the accents in the song as opposed to just dropping in a Can style drum groove behind Malkmus' writing.jason_from_volo wrote: Fri May 14, 2021 12:44 pm I've chimed in a lot on my own post already, but wanted to specifically address Pavement, who, for a long time, were my favorite band.
I think that the best drumming on any of the Pavement records was on S&E, which was only Gary Young.
Gary apparently had some problems unrelated to his drumming talent that kept him from being a reliable drummer, so they added a second drummer. After that, they replaced Gary, but kept the second drummer.
I don't recall hearing any drumming from the second drummer on CR,CR; I hear some auxiliary percussion on WZ; I do hear the second drumset on BtC (on "Starlings of the Slipstream"); and I don't recall from TT. All in all, I don't see it adding much.
That being said, I love Bob N's role in Pavement. It's completely unnecessary, which is why it's so awesome. We should have a separate crap/not crap just for Bob N, and I would emphatically vote "not crap".
At a point I did as well - "it's a California jam band thing". But then consider The Fall had two drummers.wot wrote: Fri May 14, 2021 12:53 pm I always assumed the two drummers thing in Pavement was another aspect of the Grateful Dead cosplay.
Nope! The "ex-Die Kreuzen" pedigree certainly helped.jason_from_volo wrote: Tue May 18, 2021 8:07 pmGreat band name.
Did they have trouble getting gigs?
