Re: Introductions: How did I get here?

I liked Albini and so on and by pure chance noticed when visiting the website that there was a forum as well. I registered in 2010. At the time I mainly hung out at a gamer forum and never having been eclectic in my internet habits, only ever giving attention to one community at any time, this was just a place I popped into every now and then. I became more of a regular around 2015. Stuck around because I was introduced to a lot of good music and witnessed and participated in many interesting discussions.

It's interesting to me that yearly IRL get-togethers became such a thing on this forum, because this mirrors the gamer forum I mentioned above. They're both also on more or less the same timeline. Maybe that sort of thing is (was) common as far as internet communities go, I wouldn't know.

I joined shortly after attending the last ATP Iceland in 2015 (not the one Shellac was at), I was familiar with the EA forum but had never signed up. My music taste was expanding into ATP-types of bands.

By day, I work for a textbook company. By night, I have my little music project where I play drums, sing, and play guitar (like a lot of folks on here).

I'm in Columbia, MO. I don't have many friends who like the same music I do, I'm glad this place is back.

Joined the original forum sometime in 2004, as I was hanging out at the record store that former forum FMs RBoyer and J.Burns ran and they were on here all the time. I also posted a bit on the old Silkworm forum and noticed a decent crossover between the two.

Played in a band that was named from the band name thread. Played a bunch of BBQs and met folks IRL, then moved to Chicago and got to know some of them even better.

Been back in Seattle for almost five years (WTF!), glad I can still get out there and see folks at the BBQ and Thundersnow as often as I've been able to.

I think I have been here since 2006. First got involved after getting into a few of the Louisville math rock bands and following a link. I have bought, sold, and donated a few things on this forum, and once been gifted a bass guitar, but have never made the trip out to Chicago, to my regret.

I came here because when I moved to Sonoma County (rated one of the top 10 Least punk rock places on earth) from Minneapolis/Eau Claire, WI I suddenly had no body to talk about The Jesus Lizard & Cows about. Came to the EA site when I was researching to intern at a studio, and discovered the forum. Found my people again.

I started lurking in the early days, eventually joined and posted occasionally, and got to know a handful of FM in real life. This is my place to discover new music, understand culture and politics, and talk shit in a tasteful way. As I got into recording, fixing gear and playing music again over the last 5 years the Tech Room is my spot to hang. Still haven't attended a BBQ, but it is on the bucket list.

I am elated that the forum is back. It was tough not having the during the pandemic.

I used to moderate the Flaming Lips forum in the early-aughts. A friend there told me about this place, which was in every way much more adult, or developed, or whatever. Lurked for a brief moment, but due to my loquaciousness found myself posting more and more. Joined a band with a FM and made good music with it for a long while. Toured w/friends. Helped with some fests. Ate lots of meals, drank lots of dranks, and have engaged in camaraderie with FMs worldwide.

Good place, this.

One of the reasons I am glad to have found this forum is the opportunity to learn from people like Randall, whose deep knowledge of Ronald Jones-era Flaming Lips (the only era I can get on board with), has informed my appreciation of that band, both the good and the bad.

Having discovered FM Steve’s work around the time of Atomizer, I have followed the results of his efforts over the years but only discovered the studio website and forum in 2007, joining in 2008. It has been a great place to meet some fine folks, learn some technical mumbo-jumbo, discover great and confusing music, follow personal journeys, send gifts of wolf t-shirts, facilitate the purchase of aluminum guitars, and help others in need.

Salut, PRF!
