I think that the best drumming on any of the Pavement records was on S&E, which was only Gary Young.

Gary apparently had some problems unrelated to his drumming talent that kept him from being a reliable drummer, so they added a second drummer. After that, they replaced Gary, but kept the second drummer.

I don't recall hearing any drumming from the second drummer on CR,CR; I hear some auxiliary percussion on WZ; I do hear the second drumset on BtC (on "Starlings of the Slipstream"); and I don't recall from TT. All in all, I don't see it adding much.

That being said, I love Bob N's role in Pavement. It's completely unnecessary, which is why it's so awesome. We should have a separate crap/not crap just for Bob N, and I would emphatically vote "not crap".
I think Gary Young was more versatile, in that he played to all the accents in the song as opposed to just dropping in a Can style drum groove behind Malkmus' writing.
But yeah, he was unfortunately on the Bonham vodka diet, I think.

I feel like its there on CR CR and mixed down, but maybe its bleed from pieces of multiple takes. Wowee Zowee is my fav and yeah, no second kit in my memory of that. I think creatively Malkmus was driving Brighten the Corners and Terror Twilight to the point where those jam band elements were no longer present.

I would definitely have to go with NOT CRAP for Nastanovich. However musically unnecessary, I'm with it.
Being "the second drummer" is just one of the things he was doing. Random screaming, toy keyboard noodles, tambourine, but also I get the impression he was both the enforcer and the chief financial officer for the band in the 90's.

At a point I did as well - "it's a California jam band thing". But then consider The Fall had two drummers.
DIY and die anyway.

First things I thought of was Ministry on the Mind… tour, Murder Inc, Hex Enduction Hour (N.C w/ N.C drumming), the 3 Melvins / Big Biz records and Pigface (borderline N.C not aided or hindered by 2 drummers) then wussier stuff like the Allmans and the Dead (N.C. but weak drumming due to drug-addled musos).

Seems like a pain to organise and you’d probably get a better result paring a drummer w/ percussionists. But who wants to be a percussionist? Nobody is waiting to do blow backstage with the percussionist.
