Fantastic player, of course. Part of what made him individually, a wonderful musician is that he had a band that allowed him to be great. So much of the dynamic of that band is “wrong” : you have a really untethered drummer who is somehow completely locked in with the guitar player, and Entwistle is over on the other side in a skeleton suit holding shit down but sort of soloing as well? On paper, it all seems like it would be a trainwreck but of course it’s the greatest live band ever!

It’s really hard, I think, to try and talk about Moon’s playing as its own thing, rather than part of the whole band. That said, the anecdote about Moon being bonkers over Beach Boys and the band living in constant fear that he’d quit The Who to play with them always makes me laugh and wonder how that all would have gone over.

Someone on here way back when compared Converge to The Who in this regard.

I only saw converge once, so my recollection is a bit fuzzy, but I do recall the drummer having a floaty, free style that seemed unique for the genre. Boston hardcore band Jerrys Kids had a similar deal, especially on the Is This My World album. I think fm motorbike guy and I discussed this a bit here shortly before the PRF was down.

yes, Brian Betzger was truly a thing to behold. But the Boston HC scene also had Chris Daley of SSD and Dave Collins of DYS, who were both amazing drummers in their own way.

The contemporary band that makes me think of the Who and Moon are/were Jesus Lizard. The way Mac drives the songs alongside Duane, was so fucking great. Then of course Dave Sims bass line just strutting through. What an incredible band. I love Jim K, and he was awesome with the Hyenas, but TJL lost something when Mac left.
