by "Bands" could the distinction be made that it's one person trying to sound like a full band vs a solo artist/composer/producer or whatnot?

I think the percentage of good vs. bad isn't much different than regular bands, but the pitfalls can be different. One man bands can have the tendency to sound too stiff/sterile/one-note, though I guess if they have bad judgement there can be obvious weaknesses too (bad drumming or vocals).

voting Not Crap only because I've done it before, and really don't wanna acknowledge my own crappiness.

I feel like this gets to be the case with a lot of those BLAH BLAH & THE WHATZ-ITS bands, if it's a case of the leader writing the songs and arrangements and not letting the backing band adjust things much. Can think of a few examples where things start to get a little samey after 2-3 records.

Yeah if you're talking about some dude on the street with an acoustic, a drum on his back and a harmonica, then CRAP.

If it refers to one guy making multitracks on his own i.e. Mike Oldfield style then NOT CRAP.

Why is that crap?
Have you ever heard them?
Their music isn't for me (does Neil Young playing guitar and harmonica at the same time and then piano and harmonica, count?), but I don't find the whole concept crap because of it.
I know it takes a lot of practice, dedication and love for what you are doing to achieve it. I can barely eat and think at the same time.
Sorry for my shitty English
