Suffer by Bad Religion and Punk in Drublic by NOFX have a few moments but even the best of this stuff is very one-dimensional. The bigger second tier stuff (Pennywise, Lagwagon, etc) is very forgettable; each band is almost indistinguishable from their peers.

There could almost be another thread about bands of this genre who actually don't suck. Bad Religion is a good call, there 80's stuff is pretty great. I think both No Use For a Name and Face to Face are also quite a bit better than their peers thanks to their song craft. Propaganda was always looking beyond that little world, it's no wonder they bloomed into a formidable cross over band with some well crafted thrash metal going on. There were some third tier bands that were absolutely awful. Guttermouth and Diesel Boy come to mind.

I spent a good portion of my 20s listening to lots of sloppy, fuzzed out shit. And I'm still OK with that, but am now so appreciative of bands that are locked in. +1 to the mention of AC/DC as a band I didn't give the time of day until well into my 40s. Super tight, super heavy band and any ridiculousness sort of fades into the background now.

Judas Priest. I dunno, I just didn't like it as a kid. Then, for some reason about 2 months ago, I put on Screaming for Vengeance and never looked back. What the hell was I thinking? Maybe they're too cool for kids.

I thought I was the only one! The cool-kid backlash definitely started a while ago, though it took me by surprise when I first encountered it (here, natch) since just about everyone in my bubble shares my view that they are self-evidently great.

I have never not loved RATM, but it's nice to see the appreciation in this thread.

On topic, I was a Joy Division skeptic / hater until around age 30, because reasons. What finally set me straight was a particularly bleak stretch of life during which I heard some JD live recordings, especially the BBC sessions. Just like that, I was obsessed. Worked my way backward to a grudging appreciation of the studio albums, and within a year I'd tracked down pretty much every expanded reissue, compilation, official bootleg, etc., etc., etc. The full-blown mania eventually subsided, but I still think of them as one of my favorite bands. Learning to stop worrying and love Joy Division also opened the door to some other bands on the "gothic" side of UK postpunk (Comsats, the Sound, first Bauhaus LP...) that I'd either ignored or dismissed before. I'm hard-pressed to think of a more total gestalt switch in my adult musical tastes, and it's not lost on me that this is ostensibly "teenage angst" music.

I used to hate Slipknot because the people who liked them tended to be jackass douchewaffles. Now I think they're enjoyable. Not my favourite band, but I like them.

Not bands per se, but I used to think all electronic music was stupid. Then I started listening to bands like Big Black and Killing Joke and Depeche Mode, and, as is my wont, I ended up researching their influences (Kraftwerk, et c.) and started listening to them. I quite like electronic music that doesn't suck now.

When I was a teenager, all I wanted to listen to was Nirvana. Then I went through a phase where I saw them as a band that grown-ups didn't listen to, then I grew the fuck up and realized you like what you like, and now I see them as a pretty great rock band that I enjoy listening to.

I used to listen to progressive metal acts like Queensryche and Dream Theater pretty extensively. I still enjoy them sometimes, but most of the time the pomposity is too much for me. I will always love Opeth, though!

I used to avoid Modest Mouse because my mom hated them, and I've since found that they're quite decent.

Oh yeah, I used to think Zeppelin was old people fuddy duddy music, now I listen to Bonzo's isolated drum tracks when I'm in a bad mood!

I will note that I do not listen to Radiohead often, but I like them.

The Band

I used to put them on a pedestal and totally believed in their schtick. After reading Levon Helm's book and seeing how stupid they kinda were in The Last Waltz, they make me cringe. Now to me they are just a bunch of caricatures who wrote some really great tunes. I still love them, but I wish that I knew zero backstory and only had the music. Robbie Robertson is a cock. The rest of the guys seemed sweet.

Slightly different, but I remember having no time at all for the idea of those William Basinski live orchestral performances of The Disintegration Loops. Then I heard them and got it very quickly.

The first time I heard The Chemical Brothers, it was a copy of the just-released Dig Your Own Hole, and I thought, "this sucks, this is just noise."

But then I heard 'Setting Sun' on the radio, and I was like, "this is cool", so I bought the CD single (ah, the late 90's). Then I heard 'Elektrobank', which wore down my defenses even further. I bought the album many years later, and it's badass. I saw them when I went to Coachella in 2011 and their live show was amazing. So they're one of the few electro groups I'm still interested in.

FOLKS!!! Radiohead has always been pretty popular on here. I used to get shot down for disliking them. Same as V.U.
