For the head, I believe I've settled on a Fender Bassman 100T. Well, I'm like 75% sure. Anyway... it seems like a good amp with the option to switch it to 25 watts and it even has a silent mode for recording direct. I was also looking at the Ampeg PF-20T amps, which are cheaper but don't seem to be quite as broad in tone options.

All that said, I'm open to other ideas if my current train of thought is likely a bad idea for a home studio setup. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

By 'almost exclusively' do you mean that there might be a small chance of using it live or in a rehearsal or loud-rock-music setting? That head will probably be fine for both duties, but you can get a similar head and cab both for much less than what that Fender goes for by itself. Unless you really like the Fender, how it sounds, etc.

Are you buying new or used?

By saying "almost", that is me holding out hope that I'll actually play with other people again at some point or do some recording sessions with bands. But yeah, for now it's mostly just for me.

I'm very interested in what other head/cab setups are similar. I do like how the Fender sounds, but if I can get a similar setup at a better price, I'm all about that.

I'm fine with either. Fender doesn't make the Bassman 100T anymore, so I was expecting to get a used one.

Along the lines of that Bassman are the VB-4 reissue and the Traynor YBA100....less frills I think, but might be a little cheaper. Can't think of any other current tube bass heads around that price/watt range, maybe look at what Mesa has to offer. There's a bunch of tube preamp/hybrid heads out there too, some class D, which may be a non starter.... anyway I can only recommend one class D head after trying out a couple of them.

Cab choice us a whole other issue. I assume you don't want a beefy combo amp?

I'll check those out, thanks!. There's just so many options that once I find something, I tend to get tunnel vision just so I don't overwhelm myself trying to find the next best thing or whatever. Not opposed to hybrid or solid state, just currently fixated on the Fender (or similar).

A combo amp might be fine. I've just never bought a proper bass rig before (hence the questions), so I figured with a head/cab that if I got one of them "wrong," I could more easily swap things out.

Some FM on the who had a red skeleton from Castlevania as a avatar and dressed as Neil Hamburger one time (gains extra good reps) told me about the "Hotone Skyline Krush Bitcrusher/Sample Rate Reducer". I like it, you might. If you hate it you can always sell it to me.

Dunno about p-bass, but my Jazz has baseslines q/p pickups (now sold as straight Seymour Duncan I think), and I love them. Happy to record a bit of neck pickup if that would be helpful. I almost always use both pickups...
