Remove pickup, route for a P pickup (in the right position), install a G&L MFD (they're $80). Or buy a cheap P body and swap the neck if you like the jazz neck better.

Sell jazz bass. Buy P bass.

Yeah, deep down I'd kind of suspected this was probably the best AND the easiest solution. Was just hoping that there was a middle-ground fix. The J-bass-on-neck-p/up has done me well for years - maybe it's time for a change.

Series wiring instead of parallel, which will give a slight low/mids boost.

Jazz Bass with SD Quarter Pounders & series wiring is Lardo's bass sound.

You could also reach out to Curtis Novak and see if he'll do one of these with the coils wired in series (if they aren't already).

I was kind of interested in finding the slightly bigger version (424) with the pitch wheel to use it in a synth-y way, but they're like $500 on Reverb now so fuck that.

I burned through 3 424's. A MK1, MK2, and MK3. I love those machines so much, I sold my MK3 when I moved because I'm an idiot, but yeah, they are ridiculously over priced for a machine that at this point is going to be 80% problems. A thing every one I ever owned had was a gradually increasing high pitched whine in the headphones, and at least one channel turning into the "always distorted" channel. I still want another one though.

I had 2 Porta 02s, and they both sounded really distorted in recording/playback mode. You basically had to trust that the part you were overdubbing was correct, because the reference sound was almost useless.

I will never record with one again, but yeah as a noise or filter-y thing (and yes, as a distortion pedal a la Medicine) they might still be fun to work with.

The 424 was always a fairly usable machine. Nice solenoid transport, Direct outputs, usable EQ and aux sends to run shit through Boss pedals. Before I sold my last one, I bumped all the remaining tapes I had into Reaper as Multitrack sessions and have mixed some down. It was WAY cleaner than I expected it to sound. I put a bunch of it on my Bandcamp page over the summer. It's weird to listen to how you thought music is put together when you were a kid, when you are a grumpy old man. 424 was great for fast song writing.

You can still find bargains in the 4-track dept. if you keep looking. However, it's not just the cost of the machine you need to worry about, even used cassettes are selling for £5+.
