I think Lynch had his brush with greatness, but seems to say "fuck it" halfway through most of his films. Would have been a great director of photography if his career had gone differently. Anyway, I think Wild at Heart is the one where he said "fuck it" a few minutes in. It just has this childish improv quality all over it. It's as if the glove from season 3 of Twin Peaks got to write a movie.
Hot take, but I couldn't disagree more.
To me its easily one of his least compromising, least "fuck it" pieces of work.

Going see it on a big screen this week!
DIY and die anyway.

A good friend of mine once described David Lynch movies as comprising a mix of good David Lynch segments and bad David Lynch segments, and the goodness or badness of the overall movie depended on that ratio. It’s not totally accurate, but it’s not totally inaccurate either. Season 3 of TP is a work of genius but still has the glove; Wild at Heart is weak but still has the auto accident.

What’s funny to me is that the glove and the cowboy in Mulholland Dr. both spring from the same creative space. And yet the glove is silly, whereas the cowboy scene is among my favorite in his entire career.
