When you see a 70s blue Vistalite kit with 2 26" kick drums and a full set of toms, from 6" down to 20" floor tom, matching snare, all for $300, don't talk yourself out of it because of silly reasons like "storage space"

Damn. I didn't sell mine but instead completely trashed it during my high school and college marching band days.

I have a cheap Holton trumpet my parents bought for me in 1989? when I started playing, and I used it for HS marching band after getting the Bach. Dropped it on its bell a few times. Still own it, but it needs parts and I haven't taken it out of the case in probably 15 years. Maybe one of my kids will want to play it some day.

Don't buy that new Pearl drum kit that you can only afford the shells for. Go to Craigslist and grab a used kit on the cheap, you'll spend more time playing it because you won't be perpetually saving up for cymbals. Stay away from that one sociopath who is responsible for your pawning your first drum kit and almost losing all of your other gear to make ends meet. All she wants is to use you so she doesn't have to get a job. Don't buy an EMG 81 for your Jackson; you like Gibson pickups more than you think you do.

Don't buy anything. Go in to accounting or lawyering or doctoring or computering or whatever. Live in a shack, put everything into google, apple, microsoft, bitcoin, whatever. Make as fuck of a ton of money as you can, retire early, buy a place on lake superior and get right w/ god or whatever while waiting for the end. You're going to hate yourself either way, so you may as well have access to clean air/water and a pile of loot instead of a pile of gear and trying to console yourself with thoughts like "well at least I sorta half-ass tried to something."

Don't spend a decade chasing after a Travis Bean. You don't need it. You can hardly play guitar in the first place and it's not going to make you better.

Start building your own cheap, fun guitars earlier. It will teach you a ton and you'll stop obsessing over shit you don't need.

Go ahead and sell those bizarre old tube amps that never work right when you need them. They're cool, but it's not worth the headache. Get a 70s Champ and a Twin. It's all you'll need.

Don't try to use a compressor while recording just because you think you're supposed to. You don't need it.
