Also, I far prefer the YoA tracklisting from the CD boxset where it opens with "No Fair" and "Youth of America".
On Over the Edge, it's like, did he even mic the drums? And yet, it wins for me too. Side 1 in particular is absolutely incredible.
I heard this from a friend who knew Greg back in the day, but apparently all the cymbal crashes on OTE were overdubbed. Going back and listening, and it does seem like the crashes weren't tracked with the rest of the drum tracks!

Agree on both points. My head says YOA but my heart says OTE. And I had no idea about the original tracklist until the Jackpot reissue, which does sound much better than the CD boxset, but I always start with Side B.

That is bizarre, but now that you mention it, I've always thought the crash cymbal stuck out from the mix somehow. Per the box set liner notes, OTE was recorded in a rented house on an 8-track (vs. 16 tracks for the first two), so I guess some drastic compromises were made. I do wish it sounded a little more hi-fi, but the vinyl reissue has enough midrange thickness that it kinda works. It's not actually mono, like Dead Moon, but it almost sounds like it is. Monolithic.

Can't remember if you and I commented about this on Fbook at some point, but supposedly (I heard this from dude who knew Greg back when and is a huge Wipers fan) all the cymbal hits on Over The Edge were overdubbed. You can kinda here it, if that's actually the case, as the cymbal crashes all seem a little disconnected from the rest of the drums.

Whoa, I didn't know that. And you're right, you can hear it. In fact, I probably can't unhear it now. As crummy as the drums sound on that record, it doesn't seem to matter. At all. And the Braineater pressing blows (at least mine does). Still doesn't matter at all to me.
