Many may have had agency. Only they know, with 20/20 hindsight, whether they did or not.
I'm only going off what I read, in which case the agency was entirely with whomever was searching for attractive girls, and handing out the passes. Given that it was his shout who was attractive enough...not sure there's any female agency there. His taste and aesthetics, although granted those could be swayed by him getting some too.
ding ding ding

I think you also have to keep in mind a lot of these girls do have crushes on their favs, do idealize them, do want Damon Albarn to be their be their boyfriend, and do think maybe this is their shot. It just seems kinda shitty to know this and use them for temporary sexual gratification anyway. Lots of bands don't.

I'm sorry but this idea that the typical groupie was this savy, invulnerable conqueresses was a convenient myth created by writers for Rolling Stone and NME, who would also have been backstage.

Entirely? Sure he was in a position of "power" of some sort, not like a boss at a job though, and that does not imply necessarily no agency on the part of those girls. Did not a single one of those girls ever decline the invitation? Ever?

Yeah. Not a mate exactly, but seeing this stuff first hand in the early 2000s when I was playing out more is way different than postulating about the ethics of '70s groupie culture. It was more a feeling of "..really? we're still doing this?", like some dinosaur rock relic that should have gone the way of pyrotechnics.

These were the sad arseholes that bullied Nardwuar in that hotel room clip? Not even going to find a youtube link, shit like that just makes my blood boil.
Seems he invokes these kind of reactions.
Due to his absurd and eccentric style, he has been attacked verbally, physically threatened, and intimidated by people such as Sebastian Bach of Skid Row (who stole Nardwuar's favorite toque), the band Quiet Riot (who chased Nardwuar and crew down the street), Sonic Youth and Dave Rowntree of Blur. Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, Travis Barker, Lydia Lunch, Harlan Ellison, Beck, Nas, and others have hung up on him or been verbally combative in interviews. Chris Fehn of Slipknot, Kid Cudi and Lil Uzi Vert (lightheartedly) have left midway through an interview........Some interpret his hijinks as intentionally disrespectful, including Nas and pornographer Al Goldstein. Henry Rollins found Nardwuar to be disingenuous, saying "I like the character that you're playing. I like that you can turn it on and off. That's cute."
Back on topic, I think this subject has been covered fairly well in this thread. Just like to add, it's cool when people flip the script like Cynthia Plaster Caster did.

For some reason this is really good to hear.

What a surprise. Sensitive sook Rollins getting riled up by someone who is too punk rock for him.

If a groupie is a middle-aged person who wants to flirt with me after the show, then I give it a solid NC. Just make sure my girlfriend isn’t around. She’ll kick your ass.

If it’s someone who is angling to sleep with me, then it’s crap, especially if it’s someone under 30. Everyone under 30 looks like a kid to me, these days.
