Anyone fancy trying to lift the spirits of a political prisoner?

Craig Murray is a former British ambassador who was sacked for speaking out. He became a campaigner for human rights, and has been one of the most vocal in support of Julian Assange. He reported extensively on the Alex Salmond trial, for which it appears he has been targeted by the establishment, amongst other things.

He recently became the first person to be imprisoned in Scotland for media contempt for over 70 years. He is the first person to be imprisoned on the charge of ‘jigsaw identification’ in the UK – and, his team claim, the world.

He is 62 and in poor health, locked up for 22 1/2 hours a day.

He would greatly appreciate if people could take a moment or two to write to him. Letters or cards can be sent by the traditional paper-and-pen method via this address:

157095 C Murray
G3/34 HM Prison Edinburgh
33 Stenhouse Road
Edinburgh
EH11 3LN

Alternatively you can email him via the officially-sanctioned Email a prisoner service. This costs 40p per message.

To clarify: he wrote about court case involving a politician who used his position of power to sexually exploit women in his party. In such cases the accusers are usually granted anonymity, and breaching that is contempt of court.

There was a similar case - including jail - in a recent case involving a far-right activist called Tommy Robinson in England.

All this means it that, although he didn't explicitly name them, he provided more than enough information to identify them. It's not a mind blowing novel concept.

As it happens I read his reports. He gave details of roles, situations, and locations that in my opinion unambiguously identified the victims. I work in an area that sometimes deals with very sensitive data, and avoiding identifying participants is a hard problem. Murray took no care at all. He wants to engage in journalism, but skipped any concern with ethics.

And that's wrong. He's never been convicted of anything, has he? Yet he didn't get a suspended sentence. What are we being protected from?

But he's not a political prisoner, unless the political point you want to make is accusers in sexual assault cases shouldn't have anonymity.

Good news for my local nutter then.
My point being both are instruments of State foreign policy. BBC World Service is funded separately to vanilla BBC
