We’re visiting Glacier NP this August, and none of us have ever been there before. We’re planning to do a good amount of hiking (day, not overnight/backcountry) and, of course, Going-to-the-Sun Road. I also plan to take advantage of the dark skies for some astrophotography, but . . . What else?
Any hikes we shouldn’t miss? Sections of the park? Nearby towns and other stuff?
Re: Glacier National Park recommendations
4I'd love a report too.
Did you hike the Ptarmigan Trail at all?
Granite Park?
Any non-technical mountain summits?
Favorite trails, valleys or cirques?
This one is on my bucket list, but will probably end up a 50+ mile multi-day backpack when I do it.

Re: Glacier National Park recommendations
5It was wonderful, if a bit crowded. The crowds prevented us from doing the marquee hikes, and my daughter struggled with the altitude, so we didn’t do nearly as much hiking as I had hoped.
We really loved the area around East Glacier. It’s easy to access, but since it’s not on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, fewer people visit it. The town is a tiny speck on the map, and the terrain is gorgeous.
Definitely go into the park at night. (Which, of course, you would do on a multi-day hike.) Time your visit around dates with little or no moon. The night skies are brilliant.
