c'mon.
Cohen. no waffles.
Re: Indie rock guitarist dome: Stephen Malkmus vs. Andy Cohen
2lyrics: Cohen
songs: Cohen averaged out overall, but Malkmus' highs were higher
guitaring: Cohen seems obvious, but Maklmus' playing surprised me when I saw the Jicks later on.
guess that would be a Cohen vote, which makes sense as I really only love maybe 2 albums worth of Malkmus stuff.

4Sure, but to be clear Cohen's strengths weren't weakened with Light Coma "backing" him or in Bottomless Pit (though he was often more subdued there, same as the brief period he played with Mint Mile).jason from volo wrote: Mon Sep 13, 2021 1:05 pm All three (or four) members of Silkworm were forces on their own, though.

5Cohen.
Small waffle/clarifier:
I see Malkmus as more of a frontman/rhythm guitarist where his chords were carrying the songs he wrote much of the time, and that's what they were for. I know he plays some fun leads, but Malkmus strumming a jazzmaster is about the song for me, the way some other person strumming an acoustic is.
Cohen had a greater importance as a guitar player, and of course he could do the other thing on his awesome tunes.

6if'n y'all really want to start a dust-up, make it a fair comparison that could really divide the forum like:
Guitarist: Ira Kaplan v. Andy Cohen.
that could generate the traffic!
Re: Indie rock guitarist dome: Stephen Malkmus vs. Andy Cohen
7Yeah I was thinking Doug Martsch vs. Cohen (Cohen, since I don't like most BTS)motorbike guy wrote: Guitarist: Ira Kaplan v. Andy Cohen.
J. Mascis vs. Andy Cohen? Too far? Frankly I think Mascis is a bit overrated in that dept..
Kaplan is GREAT when he goes there, which isn't often. Otherwise that becomes too apples vs. oranges (and I like a lot of YLT's non-rocking stuff)
Re: Indie rock guitarist dome: Stephen Malkmus vs. Andy Cohen
8Anyone that gets annoyed by Pavement/Jicks, I totally get it. I love Pavement. Malkmus' guitar playing on the surface is nothing really that extraordinary but when you take a step back and notice how odd and smart it really is it is pretty great. Cohens guitar work is great but hasn't ever turned my brain quite as much. His stuff always seems to really make sense for what is going on. The thing I like about SM guitar is that it often seems like it shouldn't work but somehow works out great. If you have a wormy brain, Malkmus hits a spot.

9Huh. One of the things I like about Cohen's lead guitar playing is it frequently seems to start from a place that is familiar enough to be comforting and then take that to the nth degree, just enough that it starts to get a little weird. Like he rides the line between a laugh being exuberant and maniacal.Kniferide wrote: Mon Sep 13, 2021 2:49 pmCohens guitar work is great but hasn't ever turned my brain quite as much. Ever since wearing out Slanted, I haven't really thought too much about Malkmus' guitar playing. What are the jams that'll make me change my mind?

10I don't know if it'll 'change minds' but he solos more in the Jicks:brephophagist wrote: Mon Sep 13, 2021 2:59 pm Ever since wearing out Slanted, I haven't really thought too much about Malkmus' guitar playing. What are the jams that'll make me change my mind?
