42I won't make the mistake of saying that effort and creative courage demands enjoyment, but it does demand respect. Those guys could have coasted any number of times and they kept finding ways to try new processes and keep reinventing themselves. Some of those exercises were pretty fruitful, others less so, but I always find a new Radiohead record is worth a listen. Sometimes you get a vibrant gem like In Rainbows, and other times an icy slab like Moon Shaped Pool.
Kid A seems to have done all of those things obnoxious critics say about capturing eras, zeitgeist etc. Again, that doesn't mean it requires love, but it does seem to show some importance.

OK Computer is a solid A+ record. every one after that is good enough to get a not crap but more than anything, "There There" is an incredible song. Soaring guitar solo, fucking simple bass line that kicks ass the whole way. Wonderful stuff.

Ideally you want to operate in that world of innovation and good songs. It also helps being a 90s dinosaur that doesn’t need to compromise for the man.

46That's interesting, I'm a sucker for discussion and documentation on creative processes, and they tend to reinvent their wheel every time so I've done a lot of cooking while listening to interviews etc. I think Thom Yorke would admit to being an insufferable prick for a period of time (and there is something grating in his persona/stage presence isn't there?), but in recent years he's wisened nicely. The Greenwood brothers have always seemed like sweet guys, and Ed O'Brien also seems pretty down to earth. If I was in Radiohead, I'd be kicked out of Radiohead for saying things like "why are there no fun songs with loud, meedly-meee guitars any more", and "I think we should put the keyboards away for the next album and just bring the rock!".
Some very clever writing though. Grown up stuff that leaves me cold more often than not.

Honestly Radiohead just strikes me as boring and generic, and no matter how many times they reinvent a boring generic wheel, they're still that. As humans, they may be fine, they may be giant assholes, all I know is there's nothing in their music I care about, and no matter how hard someone tries to convince me otherwise, I'll continue to consider them incredibly over-rated and confuse them for Coldplay.
