Re: Name of band who Smashing pumpkins stole riff from?
11Yeah, I think SD was a Big Muff into a Marshall, which is pretty much the worst sound ever (for chords at least). So yeah.. kudos to Butch Vig for making it work.
The main riff, especially the bass line, were lifted by Cap'n Corg. But his was far more pop-oriented with a big butt rock chorus, as mentioned.zorg wrote: Mon Oct 11, 2021 8:26 am it's this one from the old forum....

I discovered this while interviewing SSS's former guitar player for a piece i wrote for the Milwaukee Onion, which was published this week. He said that "1979" was ripped off from their song "Point," and being skeptical of such things, i listened to the song (their old drummer burned me all their old CDs in order to refresh my memory of the band, since they broke up in 1996). Anyway, i listened to it, and holy fucking shit. It's the same riff down to the guitar tone and the bassline. It's ridiculous. "Point" came out in 1993, by the way, and "1979" was, what, 1996?
Okay that's more than a I - IV progression. The tonality, synth stuff, guitar style.... definitely a lift. They might have gotten the better song out of a really cool arrangement so.... share royalties?zorg wrote: Mon Oct 11, 2021 8:26 am It's pretty close no doubt, but such things don't bother me, as has been pointed out, it's simple stuff, and the original is missing the big choruses.
Yep. And I didn't mean to imply the simplicity of the chords meant it could be coincidental, more that it was extra lazy of a rockstar to need to lift it.losthighway wrote: Mon Oct 11, 2021 1:46 pm Okay that's more than a I - IV progression.
