A single favorite band? Not sure I've got one of those. But among several dozen favorites there's Jacques Dutronc, especially his work for Vogue, and for me the best entry point into this music has always been "Les Gens Sont Fous, Les Temps Sont Flous."
Timeless stuff, really.

33Fugazi is a band where you could pick the vast majority of their songs and it would get the job done. The whole deal is in (almost) every song.
Same with Big Black, Crazy Horse, Birthday Party, and a bunch others. If a band is effective, that should be the case.

34Tricky for Killing Joke, but 'Eighties' touches on their melancholic melodies, tribal stomp, Duane Eddy from hell guitar sound and is topped off with a slathering of political angst.
