Re: Generic Gear Opinion Request Thread

I recently had a Squier Jazzmaster refuckulated with a new aluminum neck, new hardware, new pickups - the Curtis Novak WRHB's in a Jazzmaster pickup configuration.

I don't think I care for them as much as I thought I would - I prefer that EGC top end. The HB's are too "squashy" for me. I love the clean sound, but it's hell trying to get it to play with my EQD Sunn pedal.

Are there Jazzmaster pickups closer to an EGC pickup?

How close are we talking, and close to what?

So FMs, what’s your take on the MicroKorg?
Sounds fine, has a lot of good sounds stock and yeah the vocoder. I can't get down w/ tiny keys though. If you want something that sounds reasonably legit for not much money, you could do a lot worse.

Full disclosure: there's a lot of personal icky feelings for me when all the late 90s copycat pop punk bands that were around my area started to move into whatever MTV-emo became hip in the early/mid aughts, they almost always had some guy with one of these in the band. So yeah. Ick.

They always struck me as the squier strat of synths, which is a not bad but they sure cost more these days than I would have hoped.

JFC! You aren't kidding, I wasn't aware they've been reissued - and with a pretty serious price hike.
This feels like it could go under "talk me out of it." I'm not at all a synth expert but the price these are going for, seems like you could do a lot better.
They're pretty limited (which admittedly, might be a good thing) in capability, but they do sound good. Not sure they're $500 good - and did I mention mini-keys? ick.

Yeah, you could get a decent ipad/android and quite a bit of great synth software, pair it with a usb keyboard and have a powerful set up. I dislike doing the laptop/desktop soft synth thing, but a smallish tablet with a touch screen feels more like an instrument, especially with my Keystep. Lots of conventional and weird options that way.
