Who came up with the specification of the rooms? Was it that guy at Russian Recording?

The general footprint of each room was done by sketching out various possibilities on a printed floor-plan of the building. These were talked about and argued over during the beginning stages of demolition/construction since we knew we weren't keeping any of the interior construction of the building, at least not on the ground floor. It's hard to say who came up with the final layout, since it was a thing we would all look at and make suggestions about. All being me, Tom Zaluckyj, Peter Conway, Greg Norman, Bob Weston, Rob Bochnik, Diamond Dave, Chris Manfrin, later on Chad Smith, Bill and Jessica Skibbe, the Arandas and whoever else was kicking around at the time. All these rough designs were checked against the design suggestions in F Alton Everest's Master Handbook of Acoustics, and if we noticed a discrepancy, we'd adjust one dimension or another.

Once we had everything kinda laid-out, we took those drawings to a proper architect and they did calcs for load bearing, dimensions of support members and such, then made dimensioned drawings showing all the relevant additions for approval by the city. Once those drawings got a blue stamp we were cleared to start building it.

It all seemed very casual and easy at the time, despite being an oven that burned money. I envy (slightly) anybody who does something like this now because that part of it, seeing all these ideas gradually fill-in and take shape, and eventually become a working studio, that part was exhilarating.

Its a great book. There is a PDF of the 4th ED. here, checking it out for 5 min was enough to convince me to buy a copy.

It's a fantastic book for the layperson. I used it in school and it was my primary text for learning the little acoustics I know - enough to speak intelligently with clients about primary issues and enough to know what I don't know and refer nuts-and-bolts questions to actual acoustical engineers on my team.

It's great for addressing DIY issues related to recording and small venue spaces. I'd be reluctant to rely upon it for more complex stuff like performing arts spaces, environmental noise, mechanical noise & vibration/infrasound, transmission and blocking barriers and assemblies, etc... The acoustical folks I work with have whole libraries devoted to various issues related to the discipline, especially in Oregon where we have so many statutory requirements related to acoustics & noise.
