Foobar2000 can run as a media server. It's been a while since I played with it, but I had it working, at least over my home network where I could access all the local audio on my PC through the app on my phone. It worked, but was kinda rude to work with. Kodi and Vlc I believe can also be used like this. As far as listening over a web application... Virtual machine maybe?biscuitdough wrote: Mon Nov 01, 2021 4:25 pmCommenting to follow. Anyone got a recommendation for a cloud music service?
Background: I've got a computer full of digital music that I want to be able to listen to on other devices (such as phone). There used to be a really rad Google cloud-based service (Google Music) that had an app that ran on one's computer and basically mirrored your local library on the cloud. So anywhere you are with a data connection, there is your full library. That service is now dead and i'm looking for a replacement. Ideally its something where I dont have to manually upload everything to a cloud server, and it just automatically syncs a library for me. Anybody have something specific they like? Was thinking about trying iBroadcast...
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
422I've done it with VLC on an iphone https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (free and they support most phones and tablets). I've only done it when connected to the same wifi network as the network drive where the music files are stored, so if you were going to be away from home you might need to set up some kind of remote access, which probably comes with security risks.Kniferide wrote: Mon Nov 01, 2021 5:25 pmFoobar2000 can run as a media server. I haven't tried this, but I suspect you could copy all of your music to a thumb drive and attach that to your phone with the appropriate dongle. With the IPhone it's the Camera Connection Kit, which is also useful for plugging in USB piano keyboards to play with synth apps like SynthOne .

423I set up iTunes Match a million years ago, and it will still play back things for me that I uploaded from my library through my phone/tablet whatever.
I’m not sure if it’s “worth” what I pay per month for it, but it’s one of those deals where once I set it up, uploaded my library and synced it, it did exactly what you describe and I don’t have to ever worry or think about it.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
425Yeah thanks! I was laying in the weeds waiting for a decent kit to pop up at a bargain. $200 for the drums and another $240 for the hardware and a Paiste 20" ride felt right price wise for a non-drummer to spend.twelvepoint wrote: Mon Nov 01, 2021 1:37 pm First of all, that's a nice looking kit. Congratulations!
I think the answer is "if you like it, it's good." While not the ubiquitous 12/13/16 combo, it's not weird of wrong to go outside that range if it works for you. I guess the 12-13 difference is significantly less than the 13-18 difference, but it might be cool in context. You could also experiment with tuning and head selection if that 13 seems a little high pitched relative to the 18?
I think because I am not a drummer and have only messed around on the more traditional sizes 10 12 16 etc, that this large ground tom is just throwing me a bit. It does sound good, but different. I guess I'll just fuck around and make it feel good for me.

426Yeah iTunes Match seems to be the ideal of what I want, but unfortunately I'm one of *THOSE* people (Android phone users). It doesnt seem like its compatible with Android devices.Frankie99 wrote: Mon Nov 01, 2021 6:02 pm I set up iTunes Match a million years ago, and it will still play back things for me that I uploaded from my library through my phone/tablet whatever.

427Some Androids have a mini SD/Flash whatever disc port. Those can be found in excess of 100 GB. The app that will elegantly play those files I'm not sure of but there may be a generic music player that can see your library without it being a mess.Dr Tony Balls wrote: Yeah iTunes Match seems to be the ideal of what I want, but unfortunately I'm one of *THOSE* people (Android phone users). 428I use Foobar 2000 on Android. It works.losthighway wrote: Tue Nov 02, 2021 11:03 am Some Androids have a mini SD/Flash whatever disc port. Those can be found in excess of 100 GB. Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
429I use Plex. It's pretty easy to set up. You get an old laptop or a tower computer that you know will always be connected to the internet. That computer houses your media library either via USB drive or hard disk. You install the Plex server software on that machine, tell Plex where your music directory is and it creates a database and allows you to stream it anywhere over the internet, securely. It's free if you only use Chrome to listen and $5 (one time) per mobile device app. There's also a monthly subscription--that I don't use--that comes with lots of great features, mostly aimed at people streaming 4K movies and such. Uploading new media to your database is the only major pain point and isn't as easy as Google Music. I attach a USB drive with my music to my router (most recent routers come with USB ports), then configured my router to share that drive and use basic Windows network sharing to access it from my other computers. I map the USB as a drive on my laptop and drop new MP3 folders into the music directory. Plex auto-scans for changes and incorporates them into the database. There's probably a better way to do this.Dr Tony Balls wrote: Mon Nov 01, 2021 2:03 pm This might be some straight luddite bullshit that I need to let go of but...

I used to use Subsonic on my Raspberry Pi but it died so I just recently switch to Plex. Subsonic rocks but requires basic Linux knowledge.
FWIW, Google Music lives on as YouTube Music. It's one of the more cumbersome Google products but it technically still supports the same upload/stream process as Google Music did. They've just folded it into their Spotify clone and it's actually impossible to separate your library from the streaming service library. If that sounds confusing, it's ten times as confusing to actually use but it's still a free music streaming service.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
430Probably a bit non-prf, but...
Have I been an insensitive prick?
A person asked me to mix a track of their's which isn't something I would usually do, but I'm about to mix a load of stuff, so I thought I could use it as a warm up.
Style: sort of trip-hop/shoegaze, with loads of quite fragile female vocals doing all kinds of acrobatics.
Problem: the vocals are off pitch about 1/3 of the time. Really quite poor.
Action: I asked if they were open to vocal processing (meaning pitch correction, but (I thought) diplomatically phrased).
Reply: "Oh, you mean eq and compressing? Or fx and stuff?"
Action: I said, I meant pitch correction (but added that I thought the vocals are lovely blah blah).
Result: they are upset.
No good deed goes unpunished? Or have I been a dick?
