432That is literally it. Imagine Harriet Wheeler doing that, but 2/3rds of the time in key, and 1/3rd off. Thanks for that!MoreSpaceEcho wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 10:31 am So long as you phrased it politely, you have not been a dick.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
433People can be very sensitive about their voice, and often delusional about how they sound. I can see it being a little offensive to imply there’s something intrinsically wrong with a singing performance, unless the band has entrusted a mixer with those decisions beforehand.
I think it’s really up to you whether you want to be someone who has ideas about how things should sound, and is willing to take action to steer a product in that direction, as opposed to assuming the artist has tracked is a manner consistent with their own vision and abilities. I know and have worked with recorders on both philosophical ends, and respect the different approaches. I think the important thing here is you’re being honest about your aesthetic and approach.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
434no, you weren't a dick. I would probable have declined to mix songs that I can't stand behind. I doubt that pitch correction can fix this without making it sound even worse. but I might be out of touch with what pitch correction plug-ins can do these days.Adam_I_III wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 9:31 am Probably a bit non-prf, but...
Have I been an insensitive prick?
A person asked me to mix a track of their's which isn't something I would usually do, but I'm about to mix a load of stuff, so I thought I could use it as a warm up.
Style: sort of trip-hop/shoegaze, with loads of quite fragile female vocals doing all kinds of acrobatics.
Problem: the vocals are off pitch about 1/3 of the time. Really quite poor.
Action: I asked if they were open to vocal processing (meaning pitch correction, but (I thought) diplomatically phrased).
Reply: "Oh, you mean eq and compressing? Or fx and stuff?"
Action: I said, I meant pitch correction (but added that I thought the vocals are lovely blah blah).
Result: they are upset.
No good deed goes unpunished? Or have I been a dick?
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
435It's not something I'm a massive fan of, but Melodyne can definitely do a pretty subtle job of fixing small issues. This track would require more time and Melodyne skill than I have to fix with subtlety, hence me asking if they minded 'processed' vocals as an aesthetic.bassdriver wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 11:01 am I might be out of touch with what pitch correction plug-ins can do these days.
I appreciate the responses, thanks! Clearly I need to work on diplomacy.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
436I hope my reply didn’t seem curt or critical of your people skills. I think singing can be a delicate issue to critique, especially with people who haven’t recorded a lot.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
437I think you weren't a dick, but your attempt to be sensitive (by being indirect) might have made it more harsh, in a sense. If I were the singer, I would have appreciated going straight to the point - "This here sounds out of tune. Do you want me to fix it, do you want to do a retake or do you want to leave it as is?".
On the other hand, if it sounds that bad, the singer might just be crap and totally unaware of it, which makes it into a separate larger problem that goes beyond this recording session. In that case it's understandable if they're upset since they would be totally unaware of it and nobody apparently had pointed it out to them. You probably know which is which.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
438I’m working on cloning the Zellweger MLV 10 Mic preamp. I will use the original in- and output transformers, but designed a PCB for the circuit. the prototype works fine, but I have a few questions, since I’m not really well versed in circuit design.
what is the trim pot P1 250K on the right side used for? and do I get this right that they are using the second half of the output transformer’s secondary as a feedback loop. also when I set the voltage according to the schematic T7 and T8 both MJE 370 transistors, get quite warm. is that ok for those transistors. this actually also was the case on the original boards.

439It looks like P1 and P2 are setting the bias point of the output circuit so that it runs in its linear region. You would adjust those for minimum distortion at the output.
Yes, negative feedback is through the other transforming winding and R37.
MJE370 are rated for 25W, so they can get warm without a problem.

440FM Bassdriver has such great work (and was kind enough last year to help me build my own 169 clone!) and I look forward to seeing this project.
