new SexA LP of unreleased recordings; Yugo post-punk from the '80s and '90s

In the previous iteration of this forum, SexA was something of an in-the-know favorite, especially among the Croat contingent.

Maybe you dig this band's classic 1990 LP No Sleep Till Pussy/Fuck Piction, the live cassette from 1986 (later reissued on LP), or the single that got them blacklisted by Dutch squatters?

SexA was supposed to record w/Steve in the '90s, but the Yugoslav wars put the kibosh on that. The new retrospective LP combines live and rehearsal material from 1981 to 1995.

Prerelease info, press release, and preview clips here:

https://ektrorecords.com/product/sexa-s ... pre-order/

"Unreleased recordings from the Yugoslav underground. The ’80s material mixes funky Dadaist absurdity, no wave destruction, and alienated post-punk, but by the ’90s, SexA mutated into a filthy, primal noise-rock concern."

And here's a Facebook link, if you're into that world and want to share:

Disclosure: I helped compile this thing. But I didn't release it, nor did I play in the band. Still, apologies if this belongs in the self-promotion section. Was kind of hard for me to judge.

I don't think the new album will even be on any streaming services. Although I might be wrong.

The live LP dates from the band's second incarnation and has much more of a dark post-punk sound. It's quite good but it's only a partial snapshot. Enjoy it and feel free to report back.

SexA's earliest material is frenetic and sharp, w/more obviously Balkan overtones. And the later '90s stuff is powerful and distorted, partly inspired by Rapeman but by no means derivative. This new retrospective has unreleased tracks from all three eras...

Has anyone seen the documentary on these guys "HOW WE ENTERED EUROPE: SexA CASE" ? I've never seen it and I think it's only been shown at some film festivals ?
Thanks for that.

In my opinion, it was a real shame that SexA Mk. I was basically undocumented in any physical format until now. There was a digital release of a gig from 1981 and a wild 1982 demo tape that nobody I knew had heard. We excerpted both of those and added a track from another gig, as well.

And there were also quite a few songs from the last era of the band that either didn't make it onto SexA's only studio LP or were written afterwards. One of those, "Uhode," will be the next thing that gets posted.

For a brief minute a few years back, the SexA documentary was watchable online for free. I can't remember where. But nowadays I can't find it.

I can only pick out a few words of Croatian, so I couldn't really understand most of what was going on. It seemed to feature thoughtful interviews w/Nik and Bic about living "regular" nonmusician lives in Holland, along w/some pretty cool rare and not-so-rare audio. It was kind of philosophical, from what little I could gather. Certainly worth seeing if you're a fan of the band or curious about art and music during the late Yugoslav period.

Oh damit haha can't believe I missed it.... T

Yeah the SexA Mk I stuff I've heard on there bandcamp is really creative. Interesting the release description describes it as "bizarrely angular interpretations of funk and ska". Ska? haha, didn't see that coming!

I heard "Uhode" on the "Lajanje na zvijezde - Live NL" tape but it doesnt seem to be the best audio quality, sounds a bit quiet at times.

The Jeane Jone VHS is great too (free to watch on youtube!). Wonder if it could be remastered or something ?

It's cool this label put out another noise rock classic Gaseneta's self titled LP.

Well, to be fair, the ska and funk influences come out totally disjointed, noisy, and strange. It's as much no wave as it is that stuff. But yeah, there was a tune called "Kupanje" (left off the LP) that's practically a ska song.

We took "Uhode" from the SexA Live! U Galeriji SC 2.06.1990 cassette, which sounds great. It came out suspiciously like a studio take but I think it might just be a multitrack live recording.

The Lajanje na Zvijezde tape has godawful fidelity except for the rehearsal track "Sad Yellowbelly Blackbird," which is what we took from it for the LP. That song is quite clear and for me, it's the highlight of that cassette.

The Jeane Jone video is hilarious and weird. Nik is a lovable frontman.

I "shopped" (cough, cough) the Gaseneta LP to Ektro and put that one together, as well, so thank you!

I'm trusting your transfer of the tape sounds better than mine because my one still sounds awful even for that track :'(

Oh that was you !? Fantastic :) ! Shame they only wrote 4 songs... I heard they had a film of one of their live performances but it had sadly become lost :(. Damnit!! Jun Hamano needs to come out of retirement...

Quite a few of them out there, mostly from the label that released the live LP many years ago or from former drummer Igor France.

It probably does. It did come from Nik, after all. But the live material on the tape (as opposed to the radio session and the rehearsal track, which are fine) still sounds kinda bad.

Gaseneta? Yamazaki explained to me that they didn't write more than four b/c that "seemed like enough." Basically, why write more? Hah! Never knew about the video. Don't hold your breath re: Hamano every playing again, although last I'd heard he was, at least, alive and well.
