Just to follow up on that...

The "Discounted" license is sixty dollars.

https://www.reaper.fm/purchase.php

It will get you free updates from the current version(6.41) through (7.99). That "7.99" version should stay functional even after the software moves past that.

Cannot say enough good things about it, and there are at least a few users here if you ran into any issues.

(Never mind the "Reaper..." forum itself. That thing is a gem.)

Long time reaper user. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Easy to just open an empty session and start laying down tracks, but also had endless customizable functions if you are a "get under the hood" guy. Pretty much anything you want to figure out has a youtube video that will explain how to do it in a few minutes. Just buy it. It's worth the 60 bucks, off the shelf reaper can do twice what protools can.

One of the coolest things that it does easily is multi channel (up to 64ch) recording onto a single clip. If you are doing a bunch of drum overdubs, cutting takes is a lot easier to deal with when you only have a single clip to cut versus 8-12 audio files that need to stay aligned. Just record a 10 ch audio clip and buss it out to multiple tracks to mix. Not sure if other DAW can do this now, but Reaper has been able to for a really long time. I think Nuendo can, but it is super expensive.

In the past I've just grouped the drum tracks together and it's pretty easy to edit them as a group, but this seems even easier. How do I do this? Thanks!

The setup is a little weird, so hold on tight, I'm about to get Bishop Dante AF. Once you do it you can save it as a track template.

Basically you open a track, in routing, you tell it to be a multi channel track (where it says "Parent" and "Track Channel") lets say you choose 8 channels. Then, when you arm record, and choose your input, the drop down will show "multi channel" as an option. Here you can choose any combination of stereo pairs of your IO, like say 1-8, or 2-9, etc. Now when you record, where you usually see a waveform with a single audio track in it, you will now see a single clip, with 8 waveforms in it. Now, if you have "see all takes in lane" selected, you will be able to see each punch you do in place. if you did this with individual tracks, it would be impossible to see it all on the screen. It makes edits really fast, and clean to manage. If you haven't checked out editing with multiple takes in the lane, look it up. It's great.

So, for monitoring this multi channel track on separate faders... there are 2 ways. First, make sure teh Multi Ch track does NOT feed the Master bus. Then, I create individual audio tracks for each sound source and in routing tab of the Multi CH track create pre fader, pre fx sends to the individual tracks. So I'll create Kik, Snr, OHL, OHR... etc tracks, in on the multi channel track in the routing send ch1 to KIK, ch2 to SNR, ch3 to OHL... for each source. These tracks will not have an audio file, but will give you a fader for each source for mix/monitor. This minimizes all your drums to the real-estate of a single track, and you don't even have to see the mix fader tracks in the edit window, only the mixer if you hide them in the Track Manager. This is the easiest way to monitor the multi ch track with a mix.

Now, if you DO want to see an audio file for each source, ignore the fader set up I just walked you through and do this instead. Duplicate the multi channel track for each source. in this case, you would have 8 versions of the multichannel track in your mix window. Name them for each source, and for each channel, Right click on the audio clip, Go to Item settings, Got to "Take Channel Mode" and for each track choose which audio channel of the multi channel file you want that track to reference. When you do this you will now see a single audio wave form that corresponds to the source you want on that track.

Now for method 2.1, which is how I do it almost always. I set up my routing the first way while recording, so I only have to see a single wave form, but have a mix to monitor while recording. Then, I do all my take edits, so my drum editing is mostly complete. Then, on each source track, I will right click the record arm and choose "Record Output" and just run a record for the whole session, striping each track with it's own audio file. Then in the Track Manager, I mute and hide the Multi Ch track, keeping it if I want to make edits in the future.

This may seem like a lot, but once you set it up and save it as track templates, it takes like 60 seconds to set up and if you are doing a lot of cuts and moves on a ton of tracks at once, it makes everything super clean easy.

I know, TLDR This is fucking silly

Sorry I'm taking soo much time here, but I'm on a work zoom call and this gives me something to actually do.

Here is a quick screen shot of what it looks like on my set up when all complete. This shows, the master 8ch file in the editor, and 8 individual tracks for monitoring in the mixer. You can see 2 punches in the take lanes, one has 3 takes, the second has 2. you just highlight the take you want to play live and this is all your drums. super economic.

There is no audio cause I cant record right now. Imagine 8 waveforms lined up in that clip file.

Personally, I wouldn't tape over the front like some of these suggest. But if you can get it off easily, I'd try putting some sort of insert between the speaker and the panel it's mounted to. Try felt. Cardboard. You get the idea.

The resistor idea is a good one, but I'd be scared of making the little ancient amp work too hard and stop working altogether.

EDIT

Upon closer inspection, you may not have room to do that because the speaker might not be crewed in. This one has plastic tabs melted to hold it in place.

Cool sticker location opportunity?
Thanks Tommy. To anyone who is an idiot like me and tries to shove a business card in the tiny little gap between speaker grille and the speaker, please don't. You'll puncture the flimsy little speaker and have to replace the whole unit. I might just break those little tabs, put some felt on the speaker and super glue it back on or make a little baffle that can be velcro'd to the outside. Thanks for the Stack Exchange resource!
