I'm looking for a utility EQ. My main concern right now is EQing vocals. I'm not looking for overall mix EQ, just inputs when recording, but having some outboard utility like this would be great and see where I can use it in things like recording acoustic guitars or bass when needed.

Not sure if you're on a budget or have any issues getting gear made by Uli Behringer's team of badly-treated serfs, but their Pultec EQ seems to be pretty well-regarded if your budget is strict.

Otherwise there are plenty of other possibly less-garbagey companies making EQP-1A clones. Sweetwater did a shoot out here: https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/pulte ... d-samples/ But I'm not inclined to buy anything from them since they donated to the Trump campaign.

I was looking at the Warm Audio EQ and other Pultec like ones at first. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but would this type of EQ be better in overall mixing?

I guess maybe I should be looking for something like a 5 band eq with maybe a hi/low filters?

After listening to those samples, seems like the Klark Teknik is a steal at half the price of the Warm Audio.

A Pultec is significantly different than a more regular para EQ and the simultaneous boost/cut feature is weird. Is this a situation where you can audition a few plugins and buy the hardware version of whichever one you like? Personally, I would rather just use the stock Reaper EQ most of the time than screw around patching in my Behringer EQP, but if there's some magic with it that works in your input chain, I understand.

The Warm Audio WA273-EQ Neve strip with pre and EQ sound great. It might be to high for your budget for an EQ but you also would get a Channel of pretty close to Neve sounding preamp for recording as well as an eq that can be used when mixing. I've seen good deals used on ebay.

Other than that. I used to have an old Furman PQ3 (I think) that I would mix through and it was affective. Cant think they would be anything other than almost free on the used market, but who knows. Also, I've said this a lot, but buying a used analog live sound mixer like an Allen Heath, Soundcraft, Mackie Onyx etc has a ton of utility and they can be found for under $500 all day long. Lots of EQ and Pre amps and summing and auxes to have fun with.

In fairness (and I know this is the internet so you get what you pay for) but describing something is "dogshit" or "suuuuuuuuuucked" isn't super-informative. Like "notorious for breaking" is more descriptive but we're talking about the sound of the units and you didn't like those, then why not? What is being missed in this shoot out of samples?

Well. We compared them to a vintage pultec, a tube tech a manley, and a langevin-branded solid-state manley. Oh. There was a 500-series pultec thing in there too.
It didn't really do the "pultec" thing even broadly, really.
The magic of the high-end and low-end wasn't there and it was noisy.
It just seemed like a grainy home stereo eq with similar knobs.
When the high-end was boosted everything sounded unfocused and smeared.
I can't remember much more than that.
