Compared to other cosplay cultures, I’d say it’s closer to Oi! than to oogles, since it has a definite historical frame of reference. It lacks the same violent tribalism, but it’s still silly. It’s also an extremely white phenomenon.
Agreed, especially about the whiteness. I think with the 50s nostalgia, it’s significant that that came about in the 70s, after America had gone not only through the turmoil of Vietnam, but also the Civil Rights Movement.
Posting this without judgement...

Yeah, total southern California Latino rockabilly connection. Anyone ever hear of Los Lobos? The Mavericks? There's a bunch of South American bands too.

Re: cosplay. I heard an interview with Andrew Bird who had a tenure with Squirrel Nut Zippers. He said in spite of their success he grew disenchanted with feeling like a musical museum piece for people playing dress up. I can't imagine sharing bills with a band like Cherry Poppin Daddys night after night. Blugh!

Well, the “billy” part IS Hillbilly, after all.

And that's a bad thing?
Sorry for my shitty English

I think a lot of replies established that this isn't true everywhere. On the US east coast, it does appear to be - anecdotally.

I figure noise rock skews white too, as well as a lot of my interests, so this can all be taken with a grain of salt. But living here, with the racism getting less subtle every year, it seems negligent to be on board with a community of choice that is both whiter than average, and dedicated to reliving a time that was known for segregation as much as it was for the birth of rock'n'roll.

Yeah, and perhaps my own experience with that scene skews more white than it is actually is, nationally or globally. But similar to you, the 50s nostalgia scene... I'm sure it's different for different folks, but it's hard for me to look at it as just music and style, without a lot of bad cultural stuff as well. Perhaps the maga stuff really hammered home to me that the call for a pre-civil-rights America is surprisingly still appealing to a lot of folks. I dunno, it's hard to say the 50s nostalgia has problems without seeming like I'm damning rockabilly as well! That wasn't my intent.
