Re: Punk-adjacent subculture: rockabilly
11Disagree on the whiteness of this subculture, which is (was?) at least as big in Japan as in the US. Pretty sure it exists throughout Latin America too.

I think with the 50s nostalgia, it’s significant that that came about in the 70s, after America had gone not only through the turmoil of Vietnam, but also the Civil Rights Movement.biscuitdough wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 11:56 am Much of the music, especially the legit old stuff, is classic. The culture is a definite crap though. Compared to other cosplay cultures, I’d say it’s closer to Oi! than to oogles, since it has a definite historical frame of reference. It lacks the same violent tribalism, but it’s still silly. It’s also an extremely white phenomenon.

Yeah, total southern California Latino rockabilly connection. Anyone ever hear of Los Lobos? The Mavericks? There's a bunch of South American bands too.Wood Goblin wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 12:29 pm Disagree on the whiteness of this subculture, which is (was?) at least as big in Japan as in the US. Well, the “billy” part IS Hillbilly, after all.twelvepoint wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 12:22 pmAgreed, especially about the whiteness.biscuitdough wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 11:56 am Much of the music, especially the legit old stuff, is classic. And that's a bad thing?biscuitdough wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 11:56 am Much of the music, especially the legit old stuff, is classic. The culture is a definite crap though. I think a lot of replies established that this isn't true everywhere. On the US east coast, it does appear to be - anecdotally.boilermaker wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 3:15 amAnd that's a bad thing?biscuitdough wrote: Sun Nov 28, 2021 11:56 am Much of the music, especially the legit old stuff, is classic. Yeah, and perhaps my own experience with that scene skews more white than it is actually is, nationally or globally. But similar to you, the 50s nostalgia scene... I'm sure it's different for different folks, but it's hard for me to look at it as just music and style, without a lot of bad cultural stuff as well. Perhaps the maga stuff really hammered home to me that the call for a pre-civil-rights America is surprisingly still appealing to a lot of folks. I dunno, it's hard to say the 50s nostalgia has problems without seeming like I'm damning rockabilly as well! That wasn't my intent.biscuitdough wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 6:44 amI think a lot of replies established that this isn't true everywhere. I figure noise rock skews white too, as well as a lot of my interests, so this can all be taken with a grain of salt. But living here, with the racism getting less subtle every year, it seems negligent to be on board with a community of choice that is both whiter than average, and dedicated to reliving a time that was known for segregation as much as it was for the birth of rock'n'roll.
