Electro Harmonics LPB talk;

I have an original LPB-1 that I rehoused maybe 10 years ago. Didn't use it much since. I busted it out a few weeks ago and thought I must have done something wrong; the effect was very subtle and I remembered it being a huge volume/overdrive whomp when engaged. I picked up another old one for $55 and it's the same. Pleasant effect, for sure, but more of a warm overdrive. More pronounced with humbuckers than single coils. I've only tried it out on a Champ so far, so there might be something more revealed on a bigger amp, but I definitely didn't get the big volume blast I was expecting.

Thinking back, I also had an LPB-2 for a little while (the pedal sized one) maybe 15 years ago, and I clearly remember demoing that one for a friend and it goosed the volume like crazy when you engaged it. We were both like "holy shit!"

Am I nuts? Did any of the old LPB units boost the volume that much? I thought that was the main selling point of the original device, I saw an old ad where it says something like "increase your amp's volume by up to 3X" but the ones I've got are much more of a mellow thing. Not complaining, it sounds nice, but it's not at all what I remembered it doing.

I only have experience with the LPB2 and it goosed the volume an insane amount. More than an MXR microamp in the same setup. I assumed all of them were like that. Side note: I always used single coils though.

LPB-1 and LPB-2 are the same thing, just a different form factor. Either should boost your signal volume by a good amount but being able to perceive that boost will depend on the amp you're working with. On a clean amp with a lot of headroom before breakup you'll get a lot of volume boost. On an amp that's already breaking up or close to the breakup point the boost will manifest itself as more clipping and distortion. All depends how much room there is to work with.

Ah. This makes total sense. But I've gotta say, in practice, it's weird to perceive that difference so drastically! This weekend I'll try it out with a Twin and see if the LPB-1 does what I remember it doing. Thanks Doc! And Tommy! I appreciate your insights, as always.

Anybody know what this company was?
this may not be what was recommended, but Darn Tough brand meet this description. They're expensive but they apparently do the no-questions-asked replacement.
I got on the Darn Tough train earlier this year and I'm a fan. I think the only thing they don't cover is "fire", which, I guess makes sense.

They should invest some of that money in their website. I was curious so I went to their site and clicked on best sellers. The shitshow of a result was so messed up in Chrome that it looked like some sort of Geocities nonsense.
