Listening, perhaps. Have you attended one? It's quite a different experience. I don't own any recordings of opera, but offered tickets I'll go every time. I'd even pay if it was more affordable. But alas...it's not.
I feel similarly. Can't really stand opera, but the spectacle of seeing one performed live is a different experience. You need the to see it to appreciate the
Gesamtkunstwerk, as Wagner put it.
It's a chore to listen to alone. Somebody took my wonderful, texturally, formally and harmonically rich, completely abstract, yet nuanced escape from reality and instead made it about jealous lovers, unfaithful wives, crusaders and other petty worldly bullshit. No thanks.
