First of all, just to get it out of the way, Elon Musk is a chooch. He’s plenty awful in so many ways, but so are all the other CEOs of major auto manufacturers. As valid as they may be, debates about Musk belong somewhere else.
Having said that, we recently bought a Tesla, and fuck me if it isn’t an awesome car. It was a lot of money up front, but not so much if you average out the costs over the next five or ten years. We can’t charge it at home (we live in a condo), but we also do almost all our commuting on foot or via public transportation, so charging it should be a minor inconvenience.
Who else has an EV?

2I don't, but my brother's line of work sees him drive them often. He doesn't rate Teslas over many of the alternatives, but I don't know my cars enough to say why.

3Supposedly, the Lucid Air and Rivian truck are incredible. The only non-Tesla EV I’ve seen with any regularity so far is a Volvo that frequently charges at a nearby grocery store. Not sure if I’d know a Leaf or Bolt/Volt by sight.A_Man_Who_Tries wrote: Sat Dec 18, 2021 8:45 am I don't, but my brother's line of work sees him drive them often. 4An EV would be great for me 345 days of the year, but talk to me about using one for out of state trips.
Re: The Fearsome and Mammoth and Only Allowable EV Thread
5Funny timing re: my last post: I just saw a Bolt yesterday.
The price is ridiculous, but FWIW, the Lucid Air has a battery life of 500 miles. Of course, the bigger the battery, the longer the charge time.twelvepoint wrote: Sat Dec 18, 2021 9:31 am An EV would be great for me 345 days of the year, but talk to me about using one for out of state trips.

6Lucid looks kinda boring, like the Oldsmobile of EVs.
Karma (horrible name) looks pretty hot.
Been in a Tesla once for an Uber ride. Very fun ride.
Most (male) CEOs are psychopaths, so yeah let's talk about cars.

7I’m holding out to see what Subaru/Toyota’s EV offering next year will be. If I was not holding out for an EV, I’d probably get a Subaru Crosstrek. But I’m the kinda guy that takes good care of my cars and slowly drives them into the ground, so the next one will be another 15 year commitment at least, I’d like that to be an EV. Basically, a Crosstrek EV with a 280-350 mile range and a 1,750 lb towing capacity.
None of the EVs on the market interest me, though I’m very interested in adopting the technology.

I mean, I don't want to rain on your parade or anything but there's a few horror stories out there.Wood Goblin wrote: Sat Dec 18, 2021 7:59 am Having said that, we recently bought a Tesla, and fuck me if it isn’t an awesome car. 9I’m sure you’re right. When the salesperson suggested that there wouldn’t be any maintenance costs, we thought, “Sure, there won’t be.”Curry Pervert wrote: Mon Dec 20, 2021 2:42 pmProviding nothing goes wrong.
