That Sugar Video is some of the most 90's shit I've seen in a long time. Guy brooding in an attic with a cardigan ... CHECK! camera spinning on a lazy susan... CHECK! Cut time chigachigachiga strumming... CHECK! It has it all. I always though that Sugar record sounded like what happens when Husker Du has a sleepover at Mathew Sweets house, which isn't at all a bad thing. I bet his mom bought OK Cola for the boys.
Was Japmn.

Quick question that might not fit elsewhere, what's the deal with Wilco? Are those Gen X dads I used to be friends with at work really onto something, or was I fine skipping this one? Kerble away if there's a Crap/Not Crap.
This one is kinda complicated.

Since I owned A.M. the day it was released?

I'm not exactly the "Gen X Dad..." subsection of Wilco fandom.

To me, it's always depended on the taste of a person trying to enjoy those records. First album? If you don't like Every Picture Tells A Story? Probably not much of a point.

Summerteeth? If you don't like Face The Music? Probably not much of a point?

All that said, I was out right around Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Many thanks. That just about cleared it all up for me, saving me plenty of time!

I made a new version of the Zellweger Mic preamp board I posted a couple of weeks ago. turned out that while everything looked good on the bench the preamp got too noisy on the higher stages. the preamp has 80dB of gain split into 4 16dB steps on one switch and 10 1.6dB steps on the second rotary switch. once it was switched to 64dB it just got too noisy.

so I did a new board, removing the relay switched polarity and phantom power and using board mount rotary switches. while I mostly use the auto router in Eagle, this time I was able to hand route the circuit and tried to keep the signal away from the power traces. the new board is much better. at over 64dB I can record an acoustic guitar from 6 feet away with a ribbon mic with plenty of input. don’t think I ever want to do that. turning the gain further up it’s getting hard to tell if it’s not just the noise of the room and the mic itself that I’m hearing, the mic also starts to feedback into the headphones. so I think I’m good.

Still wondering what are some tricks to design this sort of high gain PCBs. would it make sense to run all power traces on the bottom of the board and the signal on top? should I use traces as wide as possible? also I usually ground all the unused copper of the board and am wondering if it would be better to get all the unused copper stripped of the board as it’s done on a lot of old circuit boards?

I'm a fan. Personally, I think AM is weak sauce. I'd recommend both Yankee and A Ghost is Born to anyone serious about music. From there it depends on what side of the band would resonate with you. The Whole Love if you like their range of styles and studio savvy, Star Wars if you want a full big rock record from them (lots of glam guitar), and Ode to Joy is more of a slow core record.

At the end of the day they're a band with a singer songwriter at their core. If Tweedy's thing and voice resonate with you, it will take you through much of their many albums. Or the opposite.

what makes you think the layout is dominant noise source? high and very hi Z areas are most layout critical

the copper could act as an antennae, a parallel capacitance, an emi drain...

well, it was just an uneducated guess. I did some more testing, having both versions of the board in one rack. turns out that the new version is noise free up to an absurd level. way better than the first board. so I think it was a good idea to optimize the layout and the routing. getting rid of the rotary switch wiring might help as well. I’m basically curious how people more experienced in layouts and routing would go about this.

I'd be interested to know about the iron
the input transformer is 1:3. the output transformer is 1:1 with 2 secondary windings. one puts out the +/- signal, the other is used as a negative feedback (you can see the schematic on page 46).
it’s hard to find much information about these preamps, other than they were made in Switzerland in the seventies by Zellweger Uster. there’s no brand name printed on the transformers , just a number. I assume they made them in-house.
