SAME, Minor Threat had the greatest over all impact on my life.

Flag and DK still have moments when a song HAS to be heard STAT.

I probably listen to Rock for Light at least once a month. Certain songs more than that.
Voted Minor Threat for snapping depressive metal head/DK fan 16 year old me neck.

Fuck The Misfits.

NoMeansNo had some really mindblowing hardcore moments

While I love the ROIR tape and Rock For Light, and love lots of 70s reggae and dub...I don't think that Bad Brains were a very good reggae band. I can appreciate the breather it gives in the context of an album, but I never need it to go longer than a couple minutes at most.

Black Flag. Outside of some minor gripes regarding production values and individual songs, I like pretty much everything they did, even "Loose nut" and "Family Man" (well, parts of it). Bad Brains at their best did the best music though but there's so little on that level (79-83 essentially with the same bunch of songs being recorded over and over) and while I actually like both "I against I" and-dare I say it?-"Quickness" (which BTW only have 1-2 songs with the Living Colour sound; the rest sounds more metallic post-hardcore to me), it's hardly "great".

Minor Threat is to me hardcore at its dullest:overtly streamlined and faceless sound with what sounds like an angry jock with a shaved head yelling at you what you should and should not do; even the first EP isn't too hot IMO, I guess you had to be there...

Dead Kennedys were a really cool-sounding New Wave type of band but when they played straight punk or-especially-hardcore, they sound goofy to me; I agree with everything M.H. said. Had more songs sounded like "Holiday in Cambodia" or the pre-debut live stuff, I'd be a fan.

And yes, I too prefer Misfits over both MT and DKs but I understand they weren't really taken seriously. Still, listen to "Static Age" (which is more punk than HC I guess) and it shits over most other "basic" punk I've heard. I like "Earth AD" a lot as well; as far as brutal, thrashy hardcore goes, it's the tops

They are all great, but Black Flag changed my fucking life in '89. Their later stuff is God-level good. Black Flag all the way.

By the way, was anyone here around then, LA late 70s/early 80s and knew a band called The Maniacs? One member was Raven - great guy from New Zealand

This was a hard one for me. I loved all of these bands as a kid. Still love the records. I picked DK because I think it is the most original sounding. I just wish their earlier records were recorded better. But I can say the same thing about Bad Brains, who for me was the most inconsistent on the same record.

My favorite Bad Brains album is actually I Against I. Sorry-Not Sorry.

If we are talking strictly hardcore, Minor Threat had pretty much the best sound for that style. The guitars sound badass.
