What do you think of the late great Daniel Johnston?
I don't love everything he's done, but when he was at his best, I think he was one of the best songwriters and lyricists we ever had.
Re: Daniel Johnston
2Saw him in London around twelve years ago, and in spite of him being wheeled out with a bunch of session musos, he was still wildly nc
"lol, listen to op 'music' and you'll understand"....

Re: Daniel Johnston
3In hindsight, I'm not sure the 'career' aspect of his artistic expression was any good for him or his loved ones. Not that anyone's intentions were exploitative (as far as I can tell), but at some point you do have to deal w/ the work in and of itself - and these days I breathe in sharply, wince and think: this is not a good idea that he's doing this (esp w/ the audience that gathered around him in the late 80s / early 90s).
I may be completely wrong. But I can't escape that reaction. Esp when you start thinking about the minefield of issues surrounding choice and responsibility and consent and accountability....
All too sad and painful for me to engage w/ now.
We're playing Crap/Not Crap, so while I feel 'Crap' is not really the right word, there's no way I'm voting 'Not Crap'.
So Crap (by default).

5I've always loved what other singers have done with his stuff. The documentary was interesting.
His recordings aren't something I just put on, but they have a lopsided charm.
Not crap.

6A lot of his music is charming and sweet. I like what I like, but I could do without a great bit of it.
It's better than Beat Happening.
