Kinda seems like you just don't like the sound of new strings.
Not shaming, as it's a valid opinion. There's a reason I have a second bass with 20 year old flatwounds on it

22You know, earlier I was watching this YouTube video, a shootout of different bass bridges versus the stock P-Bass one*, and at one point absentmindedly thought, "Those new strings this guy's using here are......kinda ringy."Nate Dort wrote: Wed Jan 19, 2022 8:10 pm Kinda seems like you just don't like the sound of new strings.

To be fair, I don't entirely dislike the sound; it's more something I just didn't notice till the other day and now it's hard not to pick up on it. New guitar strings have struck me as bright before but never exactly "chime-y" per se, on the models I've used at least.
So yeah, probably just need to wear them down some more or get used to it.
* = After mulling it over, ended up pulling the trigger on the Fender high-mass with brass saddles. Cosmetically it's not as cool looking/"classic" as the standard bridge, but I think it sounds better (based on the above) and should provide better stability. After I install everything though, am probably gonna have to get the thud staff professionally set-up again.

23A high mass bridge might make your bass brighter. More metal to resonate at high frequencies.DaveA wrote: Wed Jan 19, 2022 8:42 pmYou know, earlier I was watching this YouTube video, a shootout of different bass bridges versus the stock P-Bass one*, and at one point absentmindedly thought, "Those new strings this guy's using here are......kinda ringy."Nate Dort wrote: Wed Jan 19, 2022 8:10 pm Kinda seems like you just don't like the sound of new strings.

To me, the G and D strings always have a different tone than E and A. I'll tend to play higher up on the E and A if I want it to sound like a bass, and only use the little strings if I want more of a surfy baritone guitar sound for a specific part.
Re: Bass strings ringing
24If we are going down the string rabbit hole, I recommend pure nickel over nickel-plated/stainless. Why? 1) they are easier on frets. 2) there is much less difference between their sound new and broken in. Hell, even new vs two years old.DaveA wrote: Wed Jan 19, 2022 6:52 pmLotta potential options. Not rushing to judgement yet. The past month has been quite the crash course in all this but it may be a while before I settle on something. There's the initial impression and then how well things hold up after weeks/months of use. So, a fair number of variables.
