We probably had this thread on the old board, but hey, new year, new board, new ideas, etc.

I wanted to see if anyone here practices drums in, say a disciplined studious manner? It's a vague resolution of mine to practice more, and smarter. Typically, my "practice" involves playing along to 80s hardcore and thrash and just get my heartrate and endurance up, which is still like 70% of what I like about playing drums at home. But lately I want to get a bit more studious and see if anyone has "real" exercises they work on? I can read music and did Syncopation and Stick Control years ago but it is rather boring and they don't (without a teacher) get into practical application.

The closest thing I've seen to inspiring instruction from someone with good taste is the series Glenn Kotche has been doing on Instagram. It looks like Blake Fleming also has some instructional stuff as well and I always loved his playing in Dazzling Killmen (never got into Mars Volta).

All ideas welcome, except if it's super technical Meshuggah style stuff, it will lose me.

I'm interested in replies to this as well.

I got the Stick Control book too and it helped with my rudiments a lot.

Sometimes I'll buy sheet music for a song or two from onlinedrummer.com, but they mostly have popular rock and pop stuff.

I used to go through all 40 rudiments a couple times a week when I was still actively drumming, but it's been awhile. Practice was recording myself playing along to our set music lists as accurately as possible.

Back in MY day, the Swiss Army Triplet was a pro-wrestling finishing move!

My partner is the drummer, so not from my own experience, but she swears by "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" and "The Drummer's Cookbook".

female drummer, always good to hear! I know stick control, but haven't heard of drummer's cookbook; I'll check it out

I have tried so hard to do rudiments so many times but I get so, so bored. I mostly just try to play whatever song I happen to be working out in my head at the time. I guess my version of rudiments is endlessly repeating fills or grooves from other drummers that I like but can never get right.
