New project popped up while I wait for the 12 string neck to arrive.
I went to visit my folks over the weekend and came back with my granda's bass drum. His snare floated around the house for decades getting banged on by kids, but I claimed it 20 years ago when I was in a band and gave it to the drummer to fix up. Things happened, people moved. I felt really bad about letting the snare go, but got it back 5 years later and it has since been thee snare in our drum set ever since. I knew there was a bass drum still squirreled away at my folks house and figured I should finally assess it before it just disintegrated. I took the hoops and heads off yesterday and it's not nearly as bad as I thought. One hoop is separated at the seam. Paint is coming off like crazy, especially on the bottom where it had been sitting for the past million years. But the shell looks pretty great, it's round, no cracks. I thought there was a crack running around the bearing edge, but it's just a really tiny gap between the bearing edge of the shell and the inner bearing hoop.
A little back story, My grandpa; Robert T. Wanderer was born in the early 20s and got this drum set in junior high. He played in the school band and with a jazz combo but that all came to an end when he finished high school and had to serve in WWII. After that he was a milk man (and one time owner of) the Glen Ellyn Dairy. He would sometimes play along to jazz records. He died before I was born.
If I'm reading the stamp correctly, this is a 1934 Ludwig Pioneer. 26"x12". I have all the hardware plus more fun stuff that's not pictured like the muffler.
I have some questions;
What is the best way to remove the paint?
For refinishing, if I paint, what paint should I use? What about a clear finish?
It looks like new hoops are readily available, I imagine I should just replace the broken/separated hoop, yes?
Recommendation for heads?
Recommendation for legs. It doesn't have any.
I'm sure I will have a lot more questions. Thank you in advance. As I was loading it up I told my mom and dad that "I know just the right people to ask about getting this back in shape". They thought it was really cool that it might make music again.
