They have some strange interface things that I hear people complain about but the footage I have seen from them usually looks good. People complain about the mounting of the 4k too. The BM Raw format works great in Resolve. A friend shot some footage using an adapter and some old Bolex lenses that looked great. For the money I'm not sure you can get better. I've seen pretty good footage from the old original Pocket Cinema1080p even. and those are cheap these days used.

WF for what I hear of BM reliability.

I'm not a camera dude but work with a lot of them, they constantly say the 6K's are going to break, but none of them at work have yet. We have some URSA 12k's but I haven't seen footage yet.

Our big rig cams are some kinda Sony that costs 20 grand. All the bells and whistles. The footage looks great, but not enough to make any sense to me.
Mother of God one can burn through some cash in this neck of the woods. Even a 6k with a batter sled and nice lens and a mic etc is getting into “maybe I’ll film everything on a potato and buy a Burl B16 rig instead” territory : )

once you start adding lenses, mounts and basic light setups, camera shit is mad expensive.

Just basic bells and whistles is another grand, and that is not including a lens.

I went with the GH5. Lots to learn but let’s here it for YouTube tute videos : )
Looks like a great choice for videography, and the micro 4/3s sensor will get you into fine lenses as a lower price point.

I realized after recommending the Fuji X-T4 that there were a few serious limitations with it being used for videography (30 min. limit at 4k; 4:2:0 chroma at 4k 10-bit, micro-HDMI instead of full sized or 6-12-G SDI out, etc...) The unlimited time at 4k, 6k anamorph support and 4:2:2 chroma are all serious video features, and the availability of lower-cost rigs probably make a better choice than Fuji or Canon.

Let us know how things come along as you get some projects done.

Enjoy!

Thanks! Shall do. Gosh it takes wonderful photos even in pointy-clicky mode.

There is a weird black hole of video solutions. Many of the touted platforms do not, as you note, shoot 4K for very long. The Sony ZV-1 thingy which is marketed as a weblog camera can only do 5 minutes before cooking.

The GH5 series and BM Pocket Cinema series were really the only things that o could find at my price point.

Anyhow, I shall dig in and get something up before too long : ) Watch this space, ad thanks for your encouragement!

I wonder if it's possible to find a camera (+accessories) with good video quality for selfmade small-time documentaries in the $500 to $700 price range. The cameras recommended in this thread are between $1200 and $1500 (extra lenses and other stuff not included). Those are probably way better than what I'd need for my purposes. I don't know much about video stuff. I'm totally fine with buying second hand, btw.

For me, "good video quality" means getting video material that is comparable to what you see on the Electrical Audio youtube channel, for example. Does anyone know what camera the folks at EA use?

On a sidenote, watch the M/S recording vid for examples of exceptional drumming.
