Heard it once and thought it was OK. After a couple more listens I think it's really, really good. Maybe great? Had "Doubts" stuck in my head while trying to get to sleep one night, and "A Force at Play" is just a wonderful detour into shimmering heaven-rock.

Fuzzy, heavy, cosmic, expansive trip.

Superchunk - Wild Loneliness

I wasn't sure at first about how good this one was going to be, it's a lot mellower than previous Superchunk albums due to it being recorded with the band in isolation from each other. Beneath the surface there is this roiling frustration and exhaustion with the pandemic and the state of the climate. "If You're Not Dark" is the most emotional song I've heard in a long time, one which a lot of us can relate to. Definitely took a few listens to get into but I love this album.

Got that not long after it was released on Bandcamp, as I follow the Unseen Worlds account, they recommended it, and liking Xenakis a bit previously, I thought, "Why not?" and took the plunge. It's the most I've ever plunked down for a digital release, more than I'd usually be willing to spend on any non-collectible recording. But it's also...totally worth it.

There have been moments during the pandemic wherein I've been at wit's end and nothing has seemed to assuage irritations and general listlessness like a good "noise cleansing." Have liked noise in the past, in a non-committal/dabbler sort of way, but it can hit the spot now in ways sometimes only previously hinted at. Xenakis's stuff along these lines is the real deal, not to mention ahead of the curve in historical terms. Will sometimes put it on even when in a perfectly good mood.

Worth noting is that the mixing and mastering are first rate, a good reason to upgrade to the new, 24-bit versions.
